Kieron Pollard has been named Mumbai Indians captain in absence of Rohit Sharma

Mumbai Indians have named West Indian all-rounder Kieron Pollard as their captain for Champions League T20 in absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma who’s missing the tournament due to finger and shoulder injuries. He recently led Barbados Tridents to Caribbean Premier League title this season.

Pollard was bought by Mumbai Indians after a fiercely fought bid between CSK, MI, KKR and RCB in 2010 after his eye catching performances in 2009 CLT20 for Trinidad and Tobago. Since then, he’s been an integral part of the Mumbai squad, but hadn’t led them prior to this opportunity.

Mumbai have had different captains over the years, with their 2011 and 2013 CLT20 wins coming under Harbhajan Singh and Rohit Sharma respectively. Even Lasith Malinga, who captained Sri Lanka to World T20 win earlier this year, was a contender for the role.

After the appointment, Pollard said he was confident of leading the team.

“It is very unfortunate that Rohit will be unable to lead the team, and I take this opportunity to wish him a fast comeback. I truly understand that it is a huge honor and a privilege to captain the vibrant Mumbai Indians side, and thank the team management for bestowing their faith in me.

“I am aware of the great expectations ahead of us. However, I am confident that together, we will face the challenges, and work towards retaining the glory and the stature of the Mumbai Indians team,” he said.

Team mentor Anil Kumble said he was pleased by the selection.

“We will definitely feel Rohit's absence in the team and wish him well. However, I strongly believe, that you can only be as good as the opportunities you get; and I am confident that Kieron with his varied experience and impressive track record, will rise to the occasion, and align the Mumbai Indians for a competitive performance.”
