Lee Westwood in action in Malaysia

Lee Westwood carded a stunning 10-under-par 62 to surge into contention after two rounds of the Maybank Championship.

The Englishman was one of several players that had to complete their opening 18 holes on Friday, after the threat of storms brought a premature end to round one.

Westwood, a two-time winner in Malaysia - including his last European Tour victory in 2014 - was two over par through 10 holes but recovered to level par by the end of round one.

And he turned on the style from there, carding 11 birdies and just one bogey - including a stretch of five in a row between the 16th and second, having started at the 10th.

That left Westwood just one stroke adrift of leaders Phachara Khongwatmai and Nino Bertasio, who each signed for rounds of 65 to sit at 11 under for the tournament.

Yuta Ikeda also impressed as a round of eight under left him tied third alongside Marc Warren, Chris Paisley, who had led at the close of day one, and Westwood.

David Lipsky, a runner-up 12 months ago, is among a cluster of seven players another shot back, while defending champion Fabrizio Zanotti is seven under.

The likes of Thorbjorn Olesen and Bernd Wiesberger, who finished third in 2017, were among those fighting to avoid the cut and make the weekend.
