In his junior year of high school baseball, Brecht averaged a 2.45 ERA with 69 strikeouts in just 34 innings. Offensively, he had a 333 batting average with three homers and 27 RBI.

The Ankeny native also holds the school record for single-season ERA (0.57) and also led the team to a conference title as a senior. He was also a dual-sport athlete at Ankeny High and played football as a wide receiver.
