Ronnie Murphy is the father of Ben Murphy. Murphy spent one season with the Portland Trail Blazers in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Murphy was born in Dover, Delaware. In the 1987 NBA draft, Portland selected him in the first round (17th overall) after he played for four years at Jacksonville University.

Standing 6' 5" (1.96 m) and weighing 235 pounds (107 kg), Murphy participated in 18 games as a guard-forward during his one NBA season (1987–88), averaging 2.0 points and 0.6 rebounds per contest. In March 1988, during practice, he broke his fifth metatarsal bone, ending his rookie season. After that, he never played basketball in the NBA.

During the 2007–08 season, Murphy served as the assistant coach for the men's basketball team of Stevenson University, the Mustangs. Murphy was admitted to Jacksonville University's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2019.
