Fentrell Cypress was born on June 5, 2001, in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Fentrell Cypress joined Northwestern High School to play high school football in his hometown. Cypress played as a cornerback and a wide receiver in high school and also played in the 2018 Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas senior all-star game.

Fentrell, in his senior year in high school, made 31 tackles, broke up 24 passes, and recorded two interceptions. Fentrell was also part of the track team in high school and won the 2018 Region 4-AAAAA championship in the 100m.

He is majoring in Anthropology and received the 2022-23 Virginia McDowell Bowen Scholarship for Football.

In 2021, at Virginia, he started six games, recorded 0.5 sacks, 0.5 tackles for loss, a 66-yard interception return for a touchdown, and seven tackles against Wake Forest. His other achievements include the 2022 Second Team All-ACC, First Team VaSID All-State in 2022, Honorable Mention All-ACC, All-ACC Academic Team at Florida State, 2021 ACC Academic Honor Roll, and First-Team All-ACC by Pro Football Focus in 2022.
