Manpreet Singh Gony was one of the finds of the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League in 2008. The fast-bowler ended the season with 17 wickets in just 16 games and he was one of the reasons behind Chennai's success. The Punjab pacer ran in briskly and bowled at good pace. He was effective at the start as he picked up wickets with the new ball and he also returned at the death to keep the runs down.

Only three bowlers took more wickets than Gony did in that season. He ended the season as CSK's leading wicket-taker in the tournament, which earned him his maiden national call-up a month later for the 2008 Asia Cup.

Unfortunately, Gony couldn’t replicate his IPL performances for the national team. He finished wicketless in his debut against minnows Hong Kong. Gony got his second cap against Bangladesh, and he ended as the most expensive bowler on the night as he conceded 65 runs in just 8 overs. His poor showings saw him dropped from the national team and he is yet to don the blue jersey after that match.

His performances in the following seasons of the IPL and for Punjab in domestic cricket weren't even close to that of his debut IPL performance and he gradually faded away from the limelight.
