Smith was known for his big hitting at the top and has done well for the national squad. He made a comeback to the national squad in 2014 against England. Smith announced his retirement from innational duty in 2017. In the 2014 player auction, Dwayne Smith was draft by Chennai Super Kings for a considerable amount but performed very well for the Men in Yellow.

Gujarat Lions brought him in the 2016 player auction and, he responded well with the bat. In the 2018 IPL auction, Dwayne Smith went unsold and will find it hard to make it to an IPL team.
