Highest run-getters for each IPL team

Ajinkya Rahane
Ajinkya Rahane

The IPL has been the biggest T20 league around the world ever since its emergence in 2008. After successful completion of 11 seasons, the stage is set for the auctions for the twelfth season. With most squads already settled, the coming auction is expected to be a short one. Also since the World Cup will be right after the completion of IPL, a lot of star players are expected to back out from the tournament to prevent fatigue and injuries.

Keeping all those factors aside, looking at the history of the tournament, there have been several foreign individuals whom the Indian crowds have embraced as their own during the IPL. The likes of David Warner, AB de Villiers, Lasith Malinga and Chris Gayle are examples. It has also been a proper platform for some fringe players for other international sides as well. Chris Morris, Shaun Marsh and Chris Lynn had their international debut after IPL.

Over the years, there have been individuals who have been exceptional for particular teams. So much so that those teams cannot be imagined without those players. Dhoni for CSK, Sachin for MI, Warner for SRH are some examples. As we get ready for the twelfth edition of the extravagant league, we look at the highest run-getter for each IPL team.

#Rajasthan Royals - Ajinkya Rahane

Ajinkya Rahane has been a constant for the Royals since 2011. He grew under the watchful eyes of his idol, Rahul Dravid and matched him shot for shot in the two editions when he opened with him. The traditionally longer format batsman proved to be a workhorse in the shortest format as well, scoring at remarkable consistency at the top. The Royals management bought back Rahane after the completion of their suspension period and handed him the captaincy in the absence of Smith.

Rahane has 2417 runs for RR from 80 innings, at an average of 34.53 and strike rate 120.49. His solitary hundred came against RCB when he hit Sreenath Arvind for six boundaries in an over. Rahane has 16 fifties to his name for RR and has hit a total of 42 sixes.

Other batsmen to score more than 1000 runs for RR are Shane Watson, Rahul Dravid, Sanju Samson and Yusuf Pathan.

#Delhi Daredevils - Virender Sehwag

Virender Sehwag
Virender Sehwag

The dashing Indian opener was the poster boy of Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) for the first six years before he was released and was bought by KXIP. He captained the side which reached the top 4 in the first, second and fifth seasons.

Sehwag also emerged as the top scorer for DD in most of the seasons he played. His five consecutive fifties in 2012 remain as one of the highlights of his IPL career.

Sehwag has 2117 runs from 79 innings at an average of 29.00 and a strike rate of 159.89, third best for DD after Morris and Pant. He has 14 fifties and 1 hundred to his name, with a best of 119*. Most of his runs came off boundaries, with 261 fours and 80 sixes to his name.

The next in the list include David Warner, Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer and Gautam Gambhir.

#Royal Challengers Bangalore - Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli

The only player in the IPL history to play for a single franchise in all seasons, Virat Kohli tops the batting charts for RCB, just like he does for India in international cricket. After having a slow start to his IPL career at a young age, Virat slowly emerged to be one of the top run-getters in IPL. He captained the side that reached the finals in the 2016 edition. Despite his own terrific form every year, he has not been able to give RCB the coveted trophy. Kohli is the only batsman to score more than 900 runs in a single season.

Virat has 4948 runs for RCB from 155 innings at an average of 38.36 and strike rate of 130.76. All four of his hundreds came in the 2016 season, with a best score of 113*. He also has 34 fifties to his name and has gone up rapidly in the six-hitting list with a total of 177 sixes.

The next best on the list are AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle, Jacques Kallis and Rahul Dravid.

#Kolkata Knight Riders - Gautam Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir
Gautam Gambhir

The former KKR skipper, who won them two IPL trophies, Gambhir is the highest run-getter for the Kolkata franchise. Owing to his interest in playing for his home team, Gauti was released ahead of the 2018 auctions. However, things did not go well for him with DD and he left captaincy after just six matches. With age and form not on his side, the Daredevils released him too. Gambhir retired from all forms of cricket in the first week of December, feeling that his time is up.

Gambhir has 3035 runs from 108 innings with a highest score of 93*. He has accumulated the runs at an average of 31.61 and a strike rate of 124.28 and has 27 fifties to his name for KKR.

The next batsmen in the list include Robin Uthappa, Yusuf Pathan, Jacques Kallis and Manish Pandey.

#Kings XI Punjab - Shaun Marsh

Shaun Marsh
Shaun Marsh

Shaun Marsh, the Orange cap holder for the first season of the IPL, had been a constant for the constantly changing KXIP lineup for the first ten seasons. Starting the tournament midway, Marsh showed incredible consistency throughout the tournament and helped his team reach the semifinals. He was one of the few overseas players who got selected for their international sides after their stellar show in the IPL.

Shaun has 2477 runs for KXIP from 69 innings at an impressive average of 39.95 and strike rate of 132.74. His solitary hundred came in 2008 and also has 20 fifties to his name.

The next best in the list are David Miller, Glenn Maxwell, Wriddhiman Saha and Kumar Sangakkara.

#Mumbai Indians - Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma

Rohit has been one of the most successful skippers in the IPL with three IPL trophies in his kitty. After MI bought Rohit in 2011, he has been able to turn things around for them, both with his batting and captaincy. 2018 was the worst IPL for Rohit as a batsman, where he failed to reach 300 runs for the first time in eleven seasons. One of the best-limited overs batsman in world cricket right now, Rohit often won games single-handedly once he got set and has performed well in big games more often than not.

Rohit has 3233 runs from 124 innings at an average of 32.26 and strike rate of 130.88. He has 26 fifties and a solitary hundred (109*) which came at his favourite ground Eden Gardens. His 133 sixes is second most for MI.

Kieron Pollard, Ambati Rayudu, Sachin Tendulkar and Lendl Simmons follow Rohit in the list.

#Sunrisers Hyderabad - David Warner

David Warner
David Warner

The face of the Sunrisers Hyderabad, the only captain to win them a title, David Warner is an indispensable part of his team. The 2016 champions were without the services of their regular captain in 2018 but managed to reach the finals, courtesy an outstanding team effort.

However, in the earlier editions, Warner was the lone warrior among batsmen, supported ably by Dhawan, and won a lot of games single-handedly. The SRH management will be desperate to welcome their best batsman back in 2019.

Warner has 2579 runs from 59 innings at an average of 52.63 for SRH, as compared to 28 for DD. Scoring at a brisk rate of 147.71, the Aussie has 26 fifties and one breathtaking ton (126*) against KKR. He has the most sixes, highest strike rate and highest average for SRH too, apart from being the highest run-getter.

Warner is followed by Shikhar Dhawan, Kane Williamson, Moises Henriques and Naman Ojha.

#Chennai Superkings - Suresh Raina

Suresh Raina
Suresh Raina

The highest run-getter in the IPL, Suresh Raina has been the most consistent batsman in the IPL, having scored a minimum of 400 runs each season except in 2017 where he fell 27 runs short. A key part of the most successful IPL team since the beginning, Raina had never missed a single game for CSK till the game against KXIP this year. He has also captained them for 3 games when MS Dhoni was injured.

Raina has 4144 runs for CSK from 143 games, at an average of 34.53 and strike rate of 139.01. He has 29 fifties and one hundred to his name. His 87 off 25 balls against KXIP in the 2014 qualifiers still remains one of the most devastating knocks in IPL. He is jointly third in the list of six hitters with 185 sixes (162 for CSK). Raina and MS Dhoni have the distinction of being part of the playoffs for most seasons (10).

He is followed by MS Dhoni, Mike Hussey, Murali Vijay and S Badrinath in the list of highest run-getters for CSK.
