Although Faf du Plessis has only just crossed 1,000 IPL runs, his performances for Chennai Super Kings before Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith formed a potent opening partnership was enough to suggest that he could open the innings with aplomb. Although he has been playing in the middle-order for both CSK and South Africa over the past year, he has the shots to succeed as an opener.
Although he has scored more T20I runs for South Africa in fewer games than in the IPL, it is largely because he hasn't had a settled role at his previous team, where he was almost used as a floater. With an assured role as an opener, it is only a matter of time before the South African T20 captain replicates his international form in the IPL.
