West Indian leg-spinner Samuel Badree has picked up the first hat-trick of the 10th edition of the Indian Premier League in the game against the Mumbai Indians at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Friday.
The 36-year-old removed Parthiv Patel, Mitchell McCleneghan and Rohit Sharma off three successive deliveries to achieve the feat in his first ever game for the Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Off the second ball of the second over, Patel smashed one towards the cover area, only to find Chris Gayle, positioned at short cover, who claimed a fine catch. Then McCleneghan walked in, hoping to give his side some quick runs, but off his first ball- a full toss- heaved one in the air and Mandeep Singh, stationed at long on took an easy catch to make it two-out-of-two.
The third and the hat-trick ball, Badree got one to straighten and skid and the ball kept a bit low after pitching and passed through bat and pad of Rohit Sharma to complete the feat and send the large crowd at the Chinnaswamy Stadium into a delirium. The hat-trick left the Mumbai Indians in tatters at 8 for 4 after 3 overs.
He ensured that the final two balls of the over also did not go for any runs and completed a rare hat-trick maiden in T20 cricket. He is only the second player from the franchise to achieve the feat after Praveen Kumar, who took one against the Rajasthan Royals in the 2010 edition.
He is also the second West Indian player after Sunil Narine to achieve the feat, Incidentally, both hail from Trinidad and Tobago. After Amit Mishra and Pravin Tambe, Badree is the third leg-spinner to achieve the feat in the IPL. This was the 15th hat-trick taken in IPL history, the last of which was taken by Axar Patel against the Gujarat Lions last year.
