Chris Gayle has the record for the highest score in an innings in an Indian Premier League game. He had scored 175 runs in just 66 balls against the now defunct Pune Warriors India. He had registered this record in 2013 and it has been five years since, and no one has come even close to the score.

Fans will be looking for someone to break that record soon. This year's IPL has some explosive batsmen in the fray and there is a definite possibility of one of them breaking the record.

Virat Kohli

Kohli had scored 4 centuries in a single season of IPL in 2016

Virat Kohli was in ominous form in the South African tour. He single-handedly won matches for the Indian team in the unfriendly South African conditions.

The Indian captain has an impressive record in IPL, especially in the 2016 edition where he had scored 973 runs in a single season. He had scored four centuries that year along with seven half centuries, with a high score of 113.

The RCB captain would be looking to take his team to their maiden IPL trophy and the team's fortunes would heavily depend on his form. He definitely has the ability to beat Chris Gayle's record if he plays at the top of the order this year.

Colin Munro is among the most explosive openers in the world right now. He has been a huge asset to the New Zealand team and this year's IPL could be a breakthrough year for him.

The Kiwi opener has scored three centuries in international T20s and has the ability to score big. He had scored one of those hundreds in India against the mighty spin attack of the Indian team, which shows his ability to tackle spin.

Munro was bought by Delhi Daredevils for just Rs 1.9 Crore, which was one of the biggest steals of this year's IPL Auction. The Delhi team might ask him to open along with Gautam Gambhir and he would be allowed to play his explosive game in a manner similar to what Chris Lynn did for KKR when Gambhir was the captain of KKR.

Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma is known for scoring the big daddy hundreds and has the experience of scoring many such hundreds in ODIs. He is the captain of the Mumbai Indians team and would be leading the defending champions in their quest for their fourth IPL title this year.

Rohit's performance would be crucial and one would expect him to stand up for his team in the IPL this year. He has been going through a poor run with India this year and will be due for some runs in the IPL.

The Mumbai Indians captain is the only Indian to score two centuries in T20 Internationals and has a high score of 118 in just 43 balls. The Wankhede pitch also offers a great batting wicket for the batsmen and Rohit would definitely be looking to break the record if he opens the batting for his team this year.

Chris Lynn will be looking to play his fifth season in the IPL this year. He had played in just five matches in his first three seasons but was given a long run in the 2017 season. However, his season was cut short due to injury.

He is presently suffering from an injury and it is not yet confirmed as to whether he would be playing in the IPL this year. He definitely has the ability to surpass Gayle's record of 175 runs in a single innings if he is fit.

The Australian batsman has a century to his name in the Big Bash League. He came close to scoring a century in the IPL last year when he scored a 93 of just 41 balls against Gujarat. He has a strike rate of 158 in the IPL which is much higher than Gayle's and McCullum's, and thus, is definitely a candidate to break Gayle's record
