IPL 2018, CSK vs KKR: 5 things you might have missed

CSK treated their fans to a brilliant run chase

Two consecutive heart stoppers from the men in yellow and this time in their own den after nearly two years.

Constructed by Shane Watson and debutant Sam Billings, who won the man of the match award, CSK chased down 203 runs in style with a six over long-on from Ravindra Jadeja to script an amazing victory.

Andre Russell’s heroics was not proved to be enough in the end who played an unbelievable inning of 88 runs amassing 11 sixes off just 36 deliveries.

Sportskeeda takes a look at the five unnoticed things from the match which cricket lovers might have missed amid fireworks which had a considerable effect on the end result of the game for both sides.

#1 Delayed toss for a bizarre reason

The toss had a 15-minute delay

Not often you would see toss being delayed due to unavailability of umpires but owing to prevailing tense situation around Chennai, match organisers forgot to transport umpires and officials to the ground along with players.

Toss finally happened after 15 minutes delay which was won by Chennai Super Kings skipper and electing to bowl first.

Match started on time and everything went as per schedule from then on including home team’s victory which brought smiles to the local fans.

#2 Sweeper cover to Chris Lynn

Dhoni employed a special field setting for the explosive Australian

Always known to be experimenting with field settings, Dhoni employed a special one to Chris Lynn by placing a fielder at the sweeper cover.

Muscling the ball away in that region has been his strengths and it was cut off by Dhoni which made Lynn look somewhere else for his scoring options.

Kieron Pollard was another notable batsman who earned a special fielding position from Dhoni with the latter employing straight mid-on tactics in the IPL final few years back successfully.

#3 Dhoni's tactics in the powerplay

Dhoni has raised a few eyebrows with his tactics in the powerplay overs

Two contrasting tactics were employed by Dhoni during the powerplay overs in both matches and it brought considerable success to his team while raising the eyebrows among cricket experts.

He used just two bowlers in the first six overs with three over spells in the tournament opener against Mumbai Indians. Against KKR he used as many as five bowlers, three of them being spinners.

Fair to say he got it right both the times but strangely underutilised the spinners, despite the pacers getting dispatched to all parts of the ground.

#4 Bravo failing to complete his spell

Bravo had a day to forget with the ball

Not often you would see Dwayne Bravo, one the best death over specialists in T20 circuit failing to complete his spell.

He was not introduced into the bowling attack until the 13th over and completed one short of his allocated overs.

He didn’t have much to complain either after conceding 50 runs at the economy rate of over 16.

It was a rare off day in the field for the Windies all-rounder after a man of the match performance in the last game.

But Bravo did redeem himself with the bat by finishing the match for his team alongside Jadeja.

#5 Vinay Kumar's first over struggles

Vinay Kumar's struggles with the ball in this season continues

Vinay Kumar opened the bowling in both matches and ended up sharing a glaring coincidence which he might not be very proud of.

He conceded two boundaries and a six both times opening the bowling for Kolkata punished by Brendon Mccullum and Watson respectively.

He, however, did recover to pick a couple of wickets back in the innings the last match and was trusted with final over by Karthik to close out the match.

But even with 17 runs in the bank, the Karnataka bowler failed to defend it in the end.

A match to forget for Vinay Kumar!
