IPL 2018, DD vs CSK: 4 Unnoticed things from the game between Delhi Daredevils and Chennai Superkings

Delhi's brilliant bowling handed them the victory over Chennai

Delhi Daredevils clashed against Chennai Super Kings at the Feroz Shah Kotla tonight. Put into bat first, Daredevils ended up scoring 162/5 in their allocated 20 overs.

This was largely due to some lusty lower order hitting by Vijay Shankar (36*off 28 balls) and Harshal Patel (36*off 18 balls). Both the batsman added 65 runs in just 32 balls for the 6th wicket to propel Delhi’s score to 162/5.

In reply, Chennai got off to a good start largely due to Ambati Rayudu’s 50 off 29 balls. But CSK lost their way losing wickets at regular intervals due to some excellent bowling by Delhi bowlers and in the end, CSK lost by 34 runs.

In a game that ebbed and flowed let us look at four unnoticed things from today’s encounter.

#4 DD opted to play with three overseas players

This was the first time Delhi went with only three foreign players in the IPL

In IPL, teams have a luxury of using four overseas players and most often than not team use that option and field-in with four overseas players. But today was a different day because Delhi opted for only three overseas players (Trent Boult, Glenn Maxwell and Sandeep Lamichhane).

This is largely due to most of their overseas players being out of form or injured.

Their star opener Jason Roy has been in terrible form so was Colin Munro, who couldn’t show his batting prowess this season.

Junior Dala or Liam Plunkett might have been given a chance but the Delhi management decided to give the Indian youngsters a chance, hence they roped in Avesh Khan for this season.

This was the first time that only three overseas players starred in an IPL game for Delhi Daredevils.

#2 Glenn Maxwell out to Jadeja thrice

Maxwell has been struggling against Jadeja in the IPL

Maxwell has been having a torrid time in this year’s IPL. In the 10 previous games, he scored only 142 runs with a below-par average of 14.20 with the best being 47 vs KKR. Today he came out to bat 3-81 when in form Pant was dismissed on the last ball of 11th over.

The onus was on Maxwell to steady the ship and take the team to a respectable score. But he played a rash shot and got out to the bowling of Jadeja for five runs.

He played a reverse sweep of an overpitched delivery that pitched and crashed on to the leg stump.

This was the third time in a row that Maxwell was dismissed of the bowling of Jadeja vs CSK and surprisingly all of them were bowled.

2018 – Bowled by Jadeja for 5 – Today - Delhi

2018 – Bowled by Jadeja for 6 – April 30th – Pune

2015 – Bowled by Jadeja for 6 – May 16th – Punjab

#2 Bravo’s most expensive last over

Bravo has been lackluster this season

Dwayne Bravo has always been Dhoni’s go-to man in the death overs of an innings. Most often than not he has delivered and lived up to Dhoni’s expectations.

The prime reason for his success has been the variation with the ball and his slower deliveries that dip into the batsman.

Unfortunately today his tactics backfired and he was taken to the cleaners by the Delhi lower order batsmen.

He was given the mantle to bowl the last over and he was greeted with a SIX straight over long-on. A single was taken off the next ball and the third ball again vanished for a SIX over mid-wicket. The fourth ball was single.

The last two balls vanished for two SIXES straight down the ground. The Punisher was Harshal Patel.

The over yielded 26runs and the over reading 6.1.6.1.6.6.

This was the most expensive last over by Bravo in his IPL career and it was the turning point of the match.

#1 Harshal Patel’s 36* is his highest score

Patel's knock proved to be a match-winning one

Patel played a crucial role in propelling Delhi’s score to 162. Coming into this innings, he averaged only 7.70 with the bat with his highest score being 24 against SRH a few weeks ago.

Patel struck huge sixes in the death overs particularly of the bowling of Dwayne Bravo and took him to the cleaners. His knock of 36 came in just 16 balls with four sixes and one boundary.

This knock of 36* is his highest score in IPL history and it proved to be a match-winning knock.
