The 29-year-old South African has been a consistent performer in the domestic circuit for a while. But despite occasional flashes of brilliance in the Ram Slam, his major breakthrough came in the Global T20 Canada League.

Van der Dussen played a pivotal role in helping his team - the Vancouver Knights - clinch the title. He was then picked to play for St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the CPL.

Recognizing his performances in these leagues, the South African selectors picked Van der Dussen for the series against the visiting Zimbabweans. He made a sparkling half-century on debut, ending up as the top scorer across both sides. In the second T20, he was even promoted to open the innings alongside Quinton de Kock.

With several key batsmen expected to back off, Van der Dussen might well get his chance during this year's IPL. He even got a feel of Indian conditions while touring with the 'A' side earlier this year.
