After losing to Royal Challengers Bangalore by a close margin on Friday, Kings XI Punjab will look to make amends against Chennai Super Kings at their home ground in Mohali. Having won 2 out of the 2 games they have played, the men in yellow will look to continue their winning streak and make it 3 in 3.

This promises to be an exciting encounter as former CSK teammate Ravichandran Ashwin will face off against M.S Dhoni for the first time in IPL. In the history of Indian Premier League, Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab have clashed against each other on 17 occasions in which CSK has won 10 games, whereas KXIP have won 7 games. At Mohali, Chennai have dominated, winning 3 out of the 4 games played here.

Let us look at 3 memorable encounters between both the teams at the I.S Bindra Stadium:

#3 Dwayne Bravo and Mike Hussey script an easy win – 2013

Put into bat first, Kings XI Punjab lost their openers Mandeep Singh and Adam Gilchrist in the 3rd over of the bowling of Dirk Nannes. Manan Vohra struck few boundaries before being dismissed off the bowling of Ravindra Jadeja for a breezy 16 of 11 balls. David Hussey (41) and Gurkeerat Singh (31) resurrected the innings to some extent before both the batsmen were dismissed in successive overs (15th and 16th) to leave Kings XI Punjab tottering at 5-116 in 15.1 overs.

The lower order didn’t contribute much as Kings XI Punjab folded for a meager 138 in 19.5 overs. Dwayne Bravo picked up 3 wickets, while speedsters Dirk Nannes and Chris Morris picked up 2 each and the spin duo of Ashwin and Jadeja 1 wicket a piece.

Chasing 139 to win, the dynamic duo of Murali Vijay and Michael Hussey took the onus upon them and stitched together an unbeaten 139 run stand to help Chennai register an easy 10 wicket win. Both the batsman reached half centuries, with Hussey being the top scorer with 86 runs of 54 balls.

For his fluent 86 runs, Michael Hussey was awarded Man of the Match.

This was the second game in the history of IPL and the debut game between Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab. Chennai won the toss and elected to bat first on a batting paradise at Mohali. The team got off a fast start before Parthiv Patel was caught by the wicket-keeper Kumara Sangakkara of Brett Lee. Matthew Hayden was bowled off the bowling of Pathan for 25. M.S Dhoni didn’t last long as he was LBW off the bowling of James Hopes and CSK were in a spot of bother at 62-3 in 7.1 overs.

Suresh Raina and Michael Hussey added quick runs with Raina being the aggressor. He was dismissed for 32 off 13 balls of the bowling of rookie Wilkin Mota. Michael Hussey went on his merry way hammering the Punjab bowlers all over the park. He bought his 50 in 31balls and upped the ante post the half-century. He smashed the Punjab bowlers for 8 boundaries and 9 sixes in his whirl-winding innings of 116*of 54 balls. He was ably supported by Subramaniam Badrinath in the death overs, who scored a quickfire 31 off 14 balls to help Chennai post a monumental score of 240/5 in 20 overs.

In reply, Kings XI got off to a racy start, thanks to their openers Karan Goel and James Hopes as the pair smashed 56 for the first wicket before Manpreet Gony picked up Goel for 24. James Hopes and Kumara Sangakkara kept the chase alive by scoring a boundary an over. Just when things were starting to turn around, James Hopes offered a catch to Joginder Sharma at long-off in the bowling of Palani Amarnath. At this stage, Kings were 111-2 in 10.2 overs and required further 131 runs in 58 deliveries.

Yuvraj Singh struck 2 sixes before he was dismissed off the bowling of Joginder Sharma for 23. Muttiah Muralidaran bowled some tight overs, which resulted in Kumara Sangakkara being dismissed by his Sri Lankan teammate for 54 in 33 balls. At this juncture, Kings XI` Punjab were 4-190 needing further 51 runs in 14 balls. In the end, they reached 207/4 in the 20 overs handing a 33-run victory to Chennai Super Kings.

Put into bat first on a humid afternoon, Chennai Super Kings got off a disastrous start losing Srikkanth Anirudha and Suresh Raina on the first 2 balls of the first over of Praveen Kumar. Murali Vijay was aggressive among the two, scoring 74 off 43 balls which comprised of 6 boundaries and 4 maximums. He was stumped off the bowling of Piyush Chawla in the 15th over.

With 5 overs left skipper M.S Dhoni walked out to the crease and he made his intentions very clear. Badrinath and he clobbered the Punjab bowlers all over the park. Dhoni, in particular, was dismissive as he scored 43 runs off 20 balls before being by Ryan Harris on the last ball of the innings. Subramaniam Badrinath remained not out on 66.

Chasing a stiff target of 189, Adam Gilchrist and newbie Paul Valthaty got the team to a cracking start. The pair struck boundaries in the powerplay and the team score reached 50 in no time. Adam Gilchrist was dismissed in the bowling of Suraj Randiv for 19 and the score was 65-1 by the end of the mandatory powerplay overs with Paul Valthaty looking in great touch.

He continues his good form despite wickets falling at the other end. Shaun Marsh was run out for 12, Sunny Singh struck few lusty blows before handing over a catch to the backward point of the bowling of Suraj Randiv. Abhishek Nayar lasted only 1 ball as he was LBW off the bowling of Tim Southee.

At 136-4 in 14.1 overs, Dinesh Karthik walked out to the crease with the required run-rate over 10 per over. He offered the strike to Paul Valthaty who clobbered the Chennai bowlers all over the I.S Bindra stadium. With 38 to win off 4 overs, Albie Morkel was given the ball to pick up wickets. Paul Valthaty smashed 3 boundaries of the first 3 balls to complete his maiden IPL century off just 53 deliveries.

13 runs were required of the last 2 overs and Paul Valthaty smashed Tim Southee for 2 boundaries helped by Dinesh Karthik at the end, who scored 3 runs in the over to bring the equation to 2 required off the last over. Dinesh Karthik finished it off in style by smashing a six of the first ball of Shadab Jakati in the 20th over to pull off a remarkable chase for Kings XI Punjab.
