Put into bat first on a humid afternoon, Chennai Super Kings got off a disastrous start losing Srikkanth Anirudha and Suresh Raina on the first 2 balls of the first over of Praveen Kumar. However, Murali Vijay and Subramaniam Badrinath ensured no further damage was done as the pair put on 124 runs for the 3rd wicket in 83 balls. Murali Vijay was aggressive among the two, scoring 74 off 43 balls which comprised of 6 boundaries and 4 maximums. He was stumped off the bowling of Piyush Chawla in the 15th over.

With 5 overs left skipper M.S Dhoni walked out to the crease and he made his intentions very clear. Badrinath and he clobbered the Punjab bowlers all over the park. Dhoni, in particular, was dismissive as he scored 43 runs off 20 balls before being by Ryan Harris on the last ball of the innings. Subramaniam Badrinath remained not out on 66.

Chasing a stiff target of 189, Adam Gilchrist and newbie Paul Valthaty got the team to a cracking start. The pair struck boundaries in the powerplay and the team score reached 50 in no time. Adam Gilchrist was dismissed in the bowling of Suraj Randiv for 19 and the score was 65-1 by the end of the mandatory powerplay overs with Paul Valthaty looking in great touch.

He continues his good form despite wickets falling at the other end. Shaun Marsh was run out for 12, Sunny Singh struck few lusty blows before handing over a catch to the backward point of the bowling of Suraj Randiv. Abhishek Nayar lasted only 1 ball as he was LBW off the bowling of Tim Southee.

At 136-4 in 14.1 overs, Dinesh Karthik walked out to the crease with the required run-rate over 10 per over. He offered the strike to Paul Valthaty who clobbered the Chennai bowlers all over the I.S Bindra stadium. With 38 to win off 4 overs, Albie Morkel was given the ball to pick up wickets. Paul Valthaty smashed 3 boundaries of the first 3 balls to complete his maiden IPL century off just 53 deliveries.

13 runs were required of the last 2 overs and Paul Valthaty smashed Tim Southee for 2 boundaries helped by Dinesh Karthik at the end, who scored 3 runs in the over to bring the equation to 2 required off the last over. Dinesh Karthik finished it off in style by smashing a six of the first ball of Shadab Jakati in the 20th over to pull off a remarkable chase for Kings XI Punjab.

For his astonishing knock of 120* of 63 deliveries, Paul Valthaty was awarded Man of the Match.
