IPL 6: Chennai Super Kings face depleted Pune Warriors

Date – 15th April 2013

Time – 8.00 p.m (IST)

Chennai Super Kings and Pune Warriors had contrasting games. While Chennai Super Kings pulled off a win against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Pune Warriors were thwarted by brilliant bowling from the Mumbai Indians. Jadeja and Morris handled the pressure situation cleverly against the Royal Challengers, while Pune Warriors were nowhere in the game against the Mumbai Indians.

Chennai Super Kings were lucky enough to win the game against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Vijay, though, played an incredible innings against the Kings XI Punjab, failed to deliver in a critical match against the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Vijay and Hussey are struggling against the new-ball and consequently, the pressure is shifted to the middle order batsman. Badrinath batted magnificently and handled the pressure situation smartly, which gave Dhoni free license to go for shots in the death overs. Chennai Super Kings bowlers did a pretty good job on a flat and dry surface. However, the death bowling is still a concern for Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the last two overs of the Royal Challengers innings produced 26 runs.

Pune Warriors, on the other hand, would be extremely disappointed with their performance against the Mumbai Indians. Dinda and Bhuvaneswar Kumar were taken for runs without difficulty by Tendulkar. However, the toss played a significant role as it was a perfect batting strip at Mumbai. Mathews, however, would be hoping for a turnaround against the steady Chennai Super Kings.

Pitch and Conditions

The wicket looks pretty good for batting and perhaps would get slower as the game progresses. There is no possibility of dew as the conditions are hot and therefore batting first would be a good option.

Players to watch

Ravichandran Ashwin – MS Dhoni has used Ashwin as a strike bowler. He hasn’t opened the bowling for the Chennai Super Kings this season, and this maybe the right time. Ashwin may open the bowling as MS Dhoni would look to keep Aaron Finch under control.

Rahul Sharma – He has had a good IPL season for the Pune Warriors that may eventually earn him a place in the national team. The Chennai wicket is ideally suited for Rahul Sharma. It would be interesting to see the approach of the Super Kings batsman against him.

Prediction

The wicket looks good for batting and the spinners will certainly relish this wicket. Angelo Mathews hasn’t played a magical innings for his side as a skipper, while the Super Kings captain MS Dhoni is in great rhythm. Chennai Super Kings have depth in their batting and their bowling has improved when compared to last season with the inclusion of Dirk Nannes. Chennai Super Kings, therefore, should not find it difficult against the Pune Warriors.
