IPL teams performance in the playoffs

Royal Challengers Bangalore will be hoping for a change in fortunes

We are fast approaching the business end of this year's IPL and the final 4 berths for a place in the playoffs are still up for grabs. While the likes of Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings are likely to feature yet again in the tournament's next stage, the remaining teams seem set to battle out fierce competition for the ticket to playoffs.

While getting into the playoffs is one side of the coin, being able to hold the nerve and come out on top in crunch situations forms the other side. A few teams tend to bring out their best in the final stages of the tournament, whereas others end up undoing their good work in the league stage. Here's a look at how the eight teams have fared in the playoffs of the previous editions of IPL.

Delhi Daredevils

Delhi Daredevils have witnessed a major slump in form over the years

Delhi Daredevils entertained some bright prospects during the initial years of the tournament. After cruising into the semi-finals of the inaugural edition, DD had decent runs in the subsequent seasons as well. The men in red and blue made it to the final four in 2009 and 2012 as well, without being able to make it to the finals even once.

Since 2013, Delhi Daredevils has experienced a major slump in form and have failed to qualify for the playoffs for the sixth consecutive time after its crushing loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad. While the younger crop, including the likes of Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, and Prithvi Shaw, has been brilliant, lack of support from the senior players has resulted in unfavorable results.

Rajasthan Royals

Rajasthan Royals was the team to beat in IPL 2008

Starting off the competition with a tag of underdogs, Rajasthan Royals stunned everyone by crushing many fancied teams and eventually emerge as the champions of IPL's inaugural season. After a rip-roaring start to their IPL journey, the men from Rajasthan grew off-color as they failed to make it to the final four in the next four editions. They, however, bounced back and made it to the playoffs in 2013 and 2015.

In the eleventh edition of IPL, RR has been quite inconsistent, to say the least. Senior pros, such as Ajinkya Rahane and Ben Stokes, who were expected to be the side's mainstays, have failed to deliver thus far. Currently, the Ajinkya Rahane-led side has to win all its remaining games to stay in contention of making it to the final four.

Kings XI Punjab haven't had luck on their side in the past

Kings XI Punjab's performance in IPL playoffs-Contrary to this year, KXIP's journey hasn't been a smooth sail over the years. By finishing in the bottom four of the table on as many as 8 occasions in 10 years, the team has certainly not done favors to its fan base. After a promising IPL in 2008, when they made it to the semi-finals, the men from up North withered away before making it to the finals in 2014.

Kings XI Punjab is one among the most formidable units in this year's IPL. A well-balanced side that is led by Ravichandran Ashwin, KXIP have been in good form this year. With 6 wins in their kitty already, the men in red and grey look poised to make to the last four and stay in contention for winning their maiden title.

Making it into the final four right in its first year in 2013, Sunrisers Hyderabad sent out a strong message. The ninth edition of IPL proved to be the golden year for the orange army when they lifted their maiden IPL trophy. 2017 too, saw them make it to the final four teams of the competition.

In a tenure of about 5 years, the team from Hyderabad has grown into a consistent unit and are currently, one of the favorites to lift the title this year. With a thumping victory over Delhi Daredevils, SRH has become the first team to qualify for this year's playoffs. Possessing one of the strongest bowling attacks among this year's squads, the Hyderabad franchise certainly appears to be the team to beat.

After a disastrous first few years, the Shahrukh Khan co-owned franchise made it to the playoff in 2011 before putting up a scintillating show in 2012 to lift its maiden title. KKR followed this up with another title in 2014. They were, however, restrained from reaching the finals in 2016 and 2017.

Kolkata Knight Riders need to bring their 'A' game to the fore to stay in the race for a playoffs spot this year. Led by Dinesh Karthik, the men in purple have been inconsistent throughout the tournament and will be hoping to turn the tide in the coming games.

Royal Challengers Bangalore

Royal Challengers Bangalore is yet to win its maiden IPL title

One of the more popular franchises in IPL, Royal Challengers Bangalore is yet to win its first title in the tournament. With a history of boasting of some of the biggest superstars of the game, RCB has never been able to justify its potential. After a forgettable first year, the team managed to make it to the final four in the next three editions. The Virat Kohli-led unit made it to the playoffs again in 2015 and 2016 with the latter year bringing them to an agonizingly close distance of winning the cup.

IPL 2018 too, similar to the previous edition, has been utterly disappointing to RCB fans. The team has lacked mettle in several areas and hasn't been in good form thus far. Currently, the fate of the men in red hangs by a thin thread as they depend on the results of other games as well for them to have a chance to make it to the final cut.

Chennai Super Kings has stood out as one of the most formidable teams in the tournament's history. Led by MS Dhoni, this franchise set the tournament on fire right from the word go and made it to the finals of the inaugural season. Barring 2016 and 2017, when the team was not in action, CSK had managed to make it to the final four in all the remaining eight seasons and ended up as the champions on two occasions.

The current season seems no different for the 'Men in Yellow' who have made a roaring comeback to the tournament. Led by MS Dhoni, the Chennai franchise looks to be in chugging along well with the senior players stepping up to the fore. With 7 wins thus far, CSK looks all set to confirm its playoff's berth soon.

Mumbai Indians is the most successful IPL team with three titles to its name

Mumbai Indians is one of the most successful teams in the history of IPL. With three titles to its name, the Mumbai-based franchise holds the distinction of winning the most number of IPL trophies in the first 10 years of the tournament. After a subdued run in the first two seasons, the men in blue managed to make it to the final four in 7 of the remaining 8 seasons.

Coming into the tournament as the defending champions, MI had stakes running high on it. However, much to the disappointment of its fans, the franchise hasn't been able to get on a winning spree this season. With 4 wins in 10 games, the Rohit Sharma-led unit will be keen on winning all its remaining encounters to make it to the playoffs. Given the team's promising form in the past few games, MI looks to be riding high on confidence and would be fancying their chances of entering the next stage of this year's IPL.
