When a dot ball was bowled in the IPL 2023 Qualifier 1 between the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the Gujarat Titans (GT) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, the broadcasters displayed a distinctive symbol of a tree.

It was incorporated as part of the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) green initiative to encourage environmental sustainability. For each dot ball bowled in the IPL 2023 playoffs, the Indian cricket board has decided to plant 500 trees.

Meanwhile, this is not something new in the IPL. The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) conceived the ‘Green Game’ concept back in 2011. Since then, RCB wear special green jerseys in one of their home games to spread awareness for a greener and cleaner environment.

Speaking of the game, the winner of Qualifier 1 will straightaway advance to the IPL 2023 final. The loser, on the other hand, will have to play Qualifier 2 against the winner of the Eliminator between the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and the Mumbai Indians (MI) for a place on Sunday's summit clash.

The Eliminator will be played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Wednesday, May 24. The Qualifier 2 and the final, on the other hand, will take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday and Sunday, respectively.

GT need to chase down CSK's 173-run target to book a final berth in IPL 2023

Defending champions GT won the toss and opted to field first against the CSK in Qualifier 1. The Chennai-based team were off to an impressive start with the bat, thanks to Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway's 87-run opening stand.

Gaikwad was the top scorer for his team in the crucial encounter, scoring 60 runs off 44 balls. Conway also chipped in with a valuable 40-run knock. The likes of Ravindra Jadeja (22), Ambati Rayudu (17) and Ajinkya Rahane (17) also delivered quick-fire cameos to propel MS Doni and Co. to 172/7 after 20 overs.

Mohammed Shami was the pick of the bowlers for Gujarat, finishing with 2/28 from his full quota of four overs.

Mohit Sharma also picked up two wickets, while Darshan Nalkande, Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad finished with one scalp each.

In response, Chennai struck early with the ball, dismissing Wriddhiman Saha (12) and Hardik Pandya (8) early in the run chase.
