Chennai Super Kings (CSK) beat Gujarat Titans (GT) by 15 runs in the first Qualifier match of IPL 2023 on Tuesday, May 23, at the Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. With the win, the Chennai side has advanced to the finals for the 10th time.

GT vs CSK match review

GT captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and opted to bowl first, anticipating that dew might assist in chasing later in the night. Ruturaj Gaikwad started watchfully and also got an early lifeline as he was caught off a no-ball in the second over. He made the Titans pay dearly for it as he smashed a match-winning 60 and received a Player of the Match award.

Devon Conway (40), Ravindra Jadeja (22), and a couple of mini contributions, along with Ruturaj's knock, helped CSK reach a decent total of 172/7 in 20 overs.

Deepak Chahar delivered the defining blow to the Gujarat Titans in the 14th over by sending in-form batter Shubman Gill to the pavilion. GT lost their way after that and got bundled out for 157.

Hardik Pandya reflected on the loss after the conclusion of the match, saying:

"I think we were quite spot on but we made some basic errors. After the first innings, the way the wicket was playing, and the bowlers we had, we gave away probably 15 runs more. (On the conditions) A lot of things we did right. It is just that we bowled a couple of slot balls in between. We were executing plans and then we gave away some runs."

He added:

"Don't think we need to look too much into it. We have another game in a few days which we need to win to make another final."We expected dew might come, it did not come. We gave 15 runs extra and as a batting unit, we lost wickets and we were chasing the game. In both departments, we did not do the right things and that is why I am here talking to you."
