Former Indian all-rounder Ravi Shastri hailed MS Dhoni for his incredible hands behind the stumps with a hilarious statement after the latter's ICC Hall of Fame induction on Monday, June 9. Dhoni aside, the 2025 batch saw his contemporaries in the men's game, Hashim Amla, Matthew Hayden, Graeme Smith, and Daniel Vettori, inducted into the Hall of Fame for their immense contributions to the sport.
Female cricketers Sarah Taylor from England and Sania Mir from Pakistan also joined the five men in one of the most decorated Hall of Fame classes.
During the ICC ceremony, Shastri paid tribute to Dhoni, saying (via Hindustan Times):
"He has hands faster than that of a pickpocket. If you're ever in India, going for a big game, especially in Ahmedabad, you don't want MS behind you; watch that back. The wallet will disappear. He gets out for zero is the same; he wins the World Cup is the same; he gets a hundred the same, and two hundred the same. There is absolutely, you know, no difference."
Dhoni enjoyed incredible success as a batter, wicketkeeper and captain in his illustrious 14-year international career. He scored over 17,000 runs across formats with 16 centuries and effected 634 catches and 195 stumpings in 538 matches.
The 43-year-old also led India to glory three times in ICC events - the 2007 T20 and 2011 ODI World Cups and the 2013 Champions Trophy. Under Dhoni, India also became the No. 1-ranked Test side in the world in the late 2000s.
"Something that I will cherish forever" - MS Dhoni on his ICC Hall of Fame induction
MS Dhoni expressed satisfaction at being inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame, making him the 11th Indian player to be honored. The champion cricketer is India's most successful captain, with 178 wins in 332 matches. He is one of only six Indians to scale the 10,000-run mark in ODIs.
Reflecting on his selection to the Hall of Fame, Dhoni told the ICC:
"It is an honor to be named in the ICC Hall of Fame, which recognizes the contributions of cricketers across generations and from all over the world. To have your name remembered alongside such all-time greats is a wonderful feeling. It is something that I will cherish forever."
Despite retiring from international cricket in 2019, MS Dhoni has continued to play in the IPL, including in the recently concluded 2025 season for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
