Wanindu Hasaranga Records

Wanindu Hasaranga is a Sri Lankan cricketer who bowls as a right-arm leg-spinner and bats right-handedly. He represents the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team, Colombo Cricket Club (domestic), Jaffna Kings (Lanka Premier League) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (Indian Premier League).

Hasaranga came into the fore when Sri Lanka was going through a tough phase after the retirement of many senior players like Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara and Tillakaratne Dilshan. He made his international debut in July 2017 but bided his time to polish his skills and become a regular member of the national team. By 2021, Hasaranga was considered as a crucial member of Sri Lanka and the heart of their bowling unit.

Hasaranga had a brief period in Sri Lanka’s red-ball cricket, having played just four Test matches and thereby focusing primarily on white-ball formats like One-Day Internationals and T20 Internationals. Apart from his commitments with Sri Lanka, Hasaranga also participates in a couple of franchise tournaments every year.

Let’s take a brief look at some of the unknown Wanindu Hasaranga records in this piece below.

Hasaranga became the first Sri Lankan player to pick a hat-trick on his One-Day International debut against Zimbabwe at the Galle International Stadium on July 2, 2017. Malcolm Waller, Donald Tiripano and Tendai Chatara were the victims of a young spin bowler who finished 3/15 from 2.4 overs.

During the third ODI between Sri Lanka and West Indies in March 2021, Hasaranga scored an unbeaten 80 to set the highest runs by Sri Lanka’s No.8 batter in One-Day Internationals.

As of October 2022, Hasaranga holds a strike rate of 103.42 (604 runs in 31 T20 Internationals). He is the only other Sri Lankan player to have an ODI strike rate above 100. Former Sri Lanka all-rounder Thisara Perera finished his ODI career at a strike rate of 112.08 (2338 runs in 166 matches).

*Hasaranga has scored the most ODI runs against West Indies - 205 at an average of 51.25 - while the spinner has picked the most wickets in the format against Zimbabwe (eight wickets at 20.25).

(*The above mentioned stat is likely to change both in terms of bowling and batting as the player is still active in international cricket).

Hasaranga jointly holds the record of most T20 Internationals dismissals in a single calendar year. Hasaranga and South Africa’s Tabraiz Shamsi picked 36 wickets in 2021, however, the Sri Lankan spinner amassed those wickets in 20 matches, two fewer than his rival.

Hasaranga holds the record for picking the most wickets in a single edition of the T20 World Cup. He picked 16 wickets in eight games during the 2021 T20 World Cup in UAE to break the record of his compatriot Ajantha Mendis (15 wickets in 2012 T20 WC in Sri Lanka).

Hasaranga is one of the five bowlers to pick a hat-trick in T20 World Cups. He achieved the milestone against South Africa in Sharjah during the 2021 T20 World Cup. Hasaranga’s dismissals were Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma and Dwaine Pretorius.

Hasaranga has picked 23 of his 84 wickets by the means of LBW in T20Is. He has inflicted the second most LBW by a bowler in the shortest format after Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan’s tally of 28 LBWs.

Hasaranga was awarded player of the series in Asia Cup 2022 for scoring 66 runs and taking nine wickets at an average of 18.89.

In the Asia Cup 2022 final against Pakistan, Hasaranga became the second player after Carlos Brathwaite to hit more than thirty runs with bat (36) and pick three wickets (3/37) in a knockout fixture.

Hasaranga picked his maiden IPL five-wicket haul with figures of 5/18 against Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2022. He recorded the second best bowling figures by a Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) bowler in the history of IPL. Anil Kumble’s 5/5 against Rajasthan Royals are top figures for the three-time IPL finalists.

Hasaranga was the highest wicket-taker of the inaugural edition of the Lanka Premier League in 2020. He snapped 17 wickets for now-defunct franchise Jaffna Stallions at an average of 11.29 and an economy rate of 5.18 with the best bowling figures of 3/15 against Dambulla Giants.
