Side quests in Tainted Grail The Fall of Avalon often hit harder than you'd expect, and The Crooked Trail is no exception. What starts as a simple favour for a guy called Rowan turns into something much darker. The quest is found during Act 2 and takes place in the Cuanacht region.

Once you're in Cuanacht, head west of the Lower City. There’s a field where some workers are gathered. One of them stands out because of his red cap — his name is Rowan. Refer to the blue arrow in the image of the map above for the exact locations.

Talk to him and he’ll explain that a few deserters stole his family heirloom — something he claims isn’t valuable but holds deep sentimental value. His exact words are:

“I…want my family's heirloom back. Look at me, I'm a poor man. That trinket is all I have left. It’s not even that valuable, to be honest. I just like to look at it and remember my family… how great they were. I'm the last one left.”

If you agree to help, The Crooked Trail begins, and a marker appears on your map, pointing you to the deserter camp. Refer to the blue box in the map image above for the deserter camp's location.

What to do at the deserter camp

Follow the marker and head south from where Rowan is standing. The deserter camp is right where he says. Once there, clear out the enemies. But remember that you won’t find the heirloom you came in search of.

Instead, in the northern part of the camp, you’ll find a letter from Rowan himself, addressed to the deserters. This is when the truth comes out. The whole thing was a setup. Rowan sent you there, hoping the deserters would kill you so they could loot your gear. He’s done it before, and he’s been taking a share of the loot every time.

Confronting Rowan

Return to Rowan and confront him. At first, he’ll deny everything. But if you keep at it, he’ll eventually admit to the trap. At this point, the quest ends — but not without a final choice. Rowan turns hostile and is marked as an enemy. You can either kill him or let him go.
