The Orange Cap is an award for the player who scores the most runs in one season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). It is one award which has been continued since the inception of IPL in 2008 and the top-class batters in the world vie for this distinguished recognition.
The inaugural edition of the Women's Premier League (WPL 2023) will also present the Orange Cap for the highest run-scorer in the 22-match tournament.
There is no such official sponsor for the Orange Cap winner of WPL 2023. It took 15 seasons for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to get a sponsor for the Orange Cap in men's IPL, with Saudi Aramco becoming the first sponsor for Orange and Purple Cap in IPL 2022.
The Orange Cap is a distinguished recognition for the player who scores the most runs by the end of the season in WPL.
Most players start the tournament with big scores for their side but not many are likely to sustain with the consistency factor. And the Orange Cap is the award for the player who manages to compile runs throughout the season rather than in a few games. The player who outwits the rest of the players in the league and finishes top on the run-scoring charts gets the Orange Cap in WPL.
The WPL 2023 will conclude on March 26 and the Orange Cap winner will be awarded after the final match. An Indian player is expected to win this award but only time will let us know what is there for the suspense.
The one who wins the Orange Cap at the end of the tournament hogs the limelight at least for the next season. The players, as seen in men's IPL, were allowed to wear the Orange Cap instead of the team cap while fielding on the ground.
The Super Over is played when the two teams have leveled the scores at the end of the 40-over game. However, the runs scored by the batters aren't considered in the contention of the Orange Cap list and neither are they counted in the player's IPL/WPL career runs.
The inaugural season of the WPL has no dearth of talented players. A total of 87 players, including 30 overseas players, have participated in the WPL 2023.
The likes of Shafali Varma, Smriti Mandhana, Harmanpreet Kaur, Jemimah Rodrigues, Meg Lanning, Alyssa Healy, Hayley Matthews and Amelia Kerr remain the top contenders to win the Orange Cap in WPL 2023.
There are no specific guidelines mentioned for the winners of Orange Cap in WPL 2023 but the rules will be moreover similar to that applicable in the men's IPL.
