About WWE Fastlane 2023

WWE Fastlane 2023 is a pay-per-view event or Premium Live Event organized by WWE. It was the seventh event under the chronology of Fastlane and the first event since 2021. Fastlane took on October 7, 2023, live from the Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The Fastlane event usually takes place in either February or March and acts as a major event on the Road to WrestleMania. In 2023, however, the event was organized in October for the first time, and that too on a Saturday, the first time for a Fastlane event.

WWE Fastlane History

WWE Fastlane is a Premium Live Event by WWE first organized in 2015. Its first five editions took place smoothly on an annual basis up until 2019. Fastlane took place on the Road to WrestleMania. The event was dropped in 2020 before being reinstated the next year at its usual spot. It was discontinued once again after 2021 and recalled in 2023, but now at a completely new spot.

The 2023 event was announced to be held in October, a new month and period for the event. The name Fastlane was given to the event to bring out its role on the Road to WrestleMania. The event was introduced in 2015 as a replacement for Elimination Chamber on the Road to WrestleMania. From 2017 to 2019 and 2021, both Elimination Chamber and Fastlane were organized between Royal Rumble and WrestleMania before Fastlane was shifted to October in 2023, replacing the slot of WWE Extreme Rules.

Judgment Day (c) vs Cody Rhodes & Jey Uso

Before Payback 2023, Jey Uso quit WWE after being betrayed by his own brother. However, at Payback, Cody Rhodes announced that Uso was joining Monday Night RAW as an individual superstar. Jey was met with opposition from the rest of RAW roster. The Judgment Day tried to persuade Uso to join their stable but Uso declined. The group then proceeded to beat Uso before he was saved by Rhodes. A title match between the two teams was then set for Fastlane.

During the match, Rhodes and Uso were disturbed by JD McDonagh, Dominik Mysterio and Rhea Ripley. Despite many interferences, it were the challengers who walked out with the victory after the 20-minute match.

Latino World Order vs. The Street Profits - Six Man Tag Team Match

On the September 22 episode of SmackDown, Santos Escobar and Rey Mysterio defeated The Street Profits in a tag team match. Bobby Lashley was disappointed from Street Profits and lashed out at them. The next week, Mysterio and Escobar faced each other in a title match, following which they were attacked by The Profits. They were then saved by the rest of LWO. Thus, a six-man tag team match between the two teams was set up.

Prior to Fastlane, Lashley and Profits took out the rest two members of Latino World Order. Mysterio and Escobar were left with no member to team with and had to go into the match in a handicap situation. However, as the match went on, they were joined by a returning Carlito. The former United States Champion performed a backbreaker on Montez Ford to secure the victory for his team.

Iyo Sky (c) vs. Asuka vs. Charlotte Flair

Damage CTRL (Bayley, Dakota Kai and WWE Women's Champion Iyo Sky) had been feuding with Asuka and then Charlotte Flair leading up to SummerSlam and after the event as well. Asuka challenged Iyo Sky for a rematch for the WWE Women's Championship Match at Fastlane 2023. Asuka was assisted by Charlotte Flair, who defeated Bayley on the September 29 episode of SmackDown. Following the match, Flair also stated her intention of challenging Sky for the WWE Women's Champion. After the match, Bayley accepted the title challenges on behalf of Iyo Sky - setting up a triple threat match between Sky, Flair and Asuka.

The match was the only female superstars match at Fastlane 2023. Sky was supported by Bayley who distracted the referee during the match. Asuka tapped out to Flair's figure-eight leglock but the same was not counted because referee had not seen it, thanks to Bayley. At the same time, Sky performed a moonsault on Flair to grab the victory and retain her gold.

John Cena and LA Knight vs. The Bloodline

John Cena returned to WWE on the September 1 episode of SmackDown and was interrupted by Jimmy Uso and Solo Sikoa. The two led a beatdown on Cena, who was saved by a returning AJ Styles. Styles' return was cut-short after he was brutally attacked by the two brothers and was left unable to compete. Thus, The Leader of Cenation was left without a partner.

On September 25, it was announced that Cena would be facing Uso and Sikoa in a Handicap match. However, the next week, he was joined by a returning LA Knight, who was added to the matchup as Cena's partner. The match between the two teams lasted for over seventeen minutes where both the teams battled almost equally. However, it was the team of LA Knight and John Cena that secured the victory after the former performed a BFT on Uso.

Seth 'Freakin' Rollins (c) vs. Shinsuke Nakamura - Last Man Standing Match for World Heavyweight Championship

Seth Rollins became the first-ever World Heavyweight Champion at WWE Night of Champions 2023 and since then has defeated Shinsuke Nakamura twice to retain the title. He beat Nakamura at Payback, following which the King of Strong Style viciously attacked the champion, requiring him to be carried out of the arena. The next night, Rollins asked for a rematch but Nakamura declined. A brawl ensued between the two of them, which would continue for almost every week building up to Fastlane. Finally, a Last Man Standing Match between the two stars was officiated for the title.

At the event, Rollins and Nakamura fought equally in a match that lasted about half-an-hour. In the end, it was the champion Rollins who stood on his feet while referee made the ten count for Nakamura.
