In 1976, Jack Nicklaus founded the Memorial Tournament, an event on the PGA Tour. The Memorial Tournament is played on a Nicklaus-designed course at the Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, north of Columbus. Muirfield Village, a large community where the golf course winds through, is home to a 1999 bronze sculpture of Nicklaus mentoring a new player in the wide Muirfield Drive middle.
With a limited field of only 120 players, the Memorial Tournament is one of only five events designated as 'invitational' by the PGA Tour. Because invitational tournaments are exempt from using the PGA Tour Priority Ranking System to fill their fields, they can choose which players are eligible to compete in their event with greater freedom than full-field open tournaments. Invitational tournaments also typically have smaller fields.

What is the history behind the Memorial Tournament?
Jack Nicklaus spent the majority of his early years in the Columbus area. The golf course he designed in Muirfield Village, north of Columbus, held the first Memorial Tournament two years after it opened in May 1974. The par-72 course measured 7,072 yards (6,467 metres), which was lengthy for the mid-1970s.
Jack Nicklaus announced during the 1966 Masters Tournament that he intended to create a worldwide championship inspired by the rich tradition and history of golf. Furthermore, he requested that charitable contributions be made by the event to Columbus, Ohio-based organisations that support children and the impoverished. The primary charitable benefactor of the tournament is Nationwide Children's Hospital.
