The Memorial Tournament is one of the eight signature events and five invitational events of the PGA Tour. The tournament originally began 48 years ago at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, by Jack Nicklaus, who also designed the course.

Muirfield Village, a sizable neighborhood that the golf course winds through, is home to a 1999 bronze sculpture of Jack Nicklaus coaching a young player in the broad Muirfield Drive median.

The Memorial Tournament annually honors a person who has made a significant contribution to the game of golf, whether they are living or deceased. Jack Nicklaus came up with this concept to help preserve the feats of the greatest players in history.

The Captains Club, an independent group of statesmen who advise on player invitations and event management in general but operate independently of the tournament organization, chooses the honoree.

The 2024 Memorial Tournament is set to take place from June 3 to June 9, with honorees Juli Inkster, a former professional with 45 pro wins, including seven majors, and Tom Weiskopf, a former professional with 28 pro wins and designer of several golf courses.

The Memorial Tournament 2024 History

The majority of Jack Nicklaus's formative years were spent in the Columbus region. The golf course he created in mid-1974 at Muirfield Village, north of Columbus, hosted the first Memorial Tournament two years later. The par-72 course measured 7,072 yards, which was a good distance for the mid-1970s.

During the 1966 Masters Tournament, Jack Nicklaus expressed his wish to establish a competition that, like the Masters, would attract players from all over the world and be influenced by the heritage and customs of the game of golf.

Further, he wanted philanthropic donations to be made by the tournament to Columbus and Ohio-based groups that assist underprivileged people and children. Nationwide Children's Hospital is the tournament's primary charity beneficiary.

The event includes an annual induction ceremony to honor former players. Nicklaus was the 2000 honoree; a plaque for each honoree is placed near the Muirfield clubhouse.

The Memorial Tournament 2024 Schedule

The 2024 Memorial Tournament will begin on June 3 and conclude on June 9. For the first two days, there will be practice rounds, followed by the honorary ceremony, and the first round will begin on June 4.

The Memorial Tournament 2024 Course

The Niklaus-designed Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, is the site of the Memorial Tournament. It is named after the Scottish town of Muirfield, where Niklaus completed the first of his three career grand slams in 1966 by winning the first of his three British Open championships.

Unveiled in 1999, a bronze sculpture depicting Nicklaus coaching a young golfer is situated in the wide Muirfield Drive median.

Several national championships and international team competitions, such as the 1986 U.S. Junior Amateur, the 1987 Ryder Cup, the 1998 Solheim Cup, the 1992 U.S. Amateur, and the 2013 Presidents Cup, have also been held at MVGC. It is one of only two US courses to have hosted the Ryder and Solheim Cups, along with The Greenbrier in West Virginia.

Adding bunkers and improving the course's appeal were among the many improvements Niklaus made to the golf course, most of which took place in the 2010s. Muirfield Village was ranked as the best golf course in Ohio and 53rd overall in the inaugural list of the top 100 golf courses in the world by Golf Digest in 2014. Muirfield Village was also ranked 14th in the US by Golf Digest in 2018.

Following the 2020 Memorial Tournament, MVGC closed and underwent extensive renovations. Bunkers were deepened and enlarged, every green complex was renovated, and some green locations were changed.

The twelfth and fourteenth holes remained unchanged, while the fifth and fifteenth holes had the most modifications. By referring to this makeover as "his final bite at the apple," Nicklaus referred to the fact that it would be his last significant renovation.
