The oldest golf major in women's golf, the U.S. Women's Open, was founded in 1946 and is one of the 15 golf championships run by the United States Golf Association (USGA). It was run by the LPGA for the first four years and the Women's Professional Golfers Association (WPGA) for the first three before becoming a USGA event in 1953.

The week following Memorial Day has been the customary date of the event since 2018. The second major of the LPGA season, the U.S. Women's Open, offers the biggest money in women's golf. The purse almost doubled in size from its previous $5.5 million (2019–2021) to $10 million beginning in 2022. The USGA declared that the winners of the men's and women's open competitions in 2024 will now split 20% of the total purse, or $2.4 million for the winner of the women's open this year.

Who won the U.S. Women’s Open in 2024?

Yuka Saso achieved her second victory at the US Women's Open in 2024, having won the event in 2021 as well, at Lancaster Country Club in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She won by three strokes over Hinako Shibonu, with a score of 276, under 4, earning the $2.4 million winner's share of the $12 million purse.

Saso finished with a final-round score of 68 to win the 2024 US Women's Open Championship, and her back nine included four birdies in a five-hole stretch. Ally Ewing and Andrea Lee finished tied for third place at even par.

Though Saso left her four-back to Minjee Lee after four-putting the par-3 sixth hole, it would turn out to be her last error in the final round. Lee, who was tied for first place at the start of the round, took the lead after making a birdie on the opening hole.

Lee had a two-shot lead going into the tenth tee, but she would bogey the tenth and find the water on the twelfth, making a double bogey. Lee ultimately finished tied for ninth place, with a disappointing final round score of 78 and a total of 283, over 3.
