This has been yet another fantastic game by Oval Invincibles. This is Dwaipayan Mukherjee, signing off alongside Bidipto. Take care!
Will Jacks (Player of the Match, 45 runs off 27 balls and an outstanding catch): "The sun came in the way of that catch but thankfully, I held on! We kept going for runs. We did not panic but kept going for runs. And eventually got the job done. We know how important it is to finish on top, I hope we have done what is needed to get to the final."
9:09 PM local time (1:39 AM IST): Oval Invincibles (153 for 4) defeat London Spirit (152 for 7) by 6 wickets!
Jordan Cox - 47 (27) | Liam Dawson - 2/30 Will Jacks - 45 (27) | Richard Gleeson - 1/21
Coming into this game, Jordan Cox was the leading run scorer in this tournament with 280 runs. He has enjoyed a sublime run of form. It was indicated by his 2nd ball boundary, a cracking pull shot after quickly picking up Richard Gleeson's good length delivery, which was followed by a lofted pull shot that went sailing all the way over the boundary ropes for a maximum. It was his 20th six in this competition, going past Liam Livingstone's tally of 19 to sit on top of the six hitting chart as well.
Jacks and Cox played like a threatening pair, gathering momentum rather easily. It was a mixture of brute force and silky timing that orchestrated a beautiful start to this chase. Both batters were extremely confident with their shot making abilities and executed them to great effect. Good batters sense moments like these when a youngster or a relatively lesser experienced bowler gets into the attack. Jordan Cox hanged back and put the short ball of Jafer Chohan away disdainfully before Jacks made a conscious effort to exert more pressure on the young leggie with a delicious inside out shot that went for a six.
Jafer Chohan's day got worse. He was tonked to different parts of the ground, and it was further exacerbated by an overstepping crime as Oval Invincibles were placed pretty comfortably at the halfway mark of this chase. The duo of Curran and Cox had put up 96 runs off only 42 balls in that memorable win against Trent Rockets. They got into the act again tonight, taking the game away from the Spirit.
Ryan Higgins used the pace variations extensively upon his arrival to the bowling crease but as has been the case for the Oval batters against most bowlers this year, they found a solution to score runs. Dawson put an end to the deadly stand that produced 45 runs from 22 balls but by the time it happened, Oval needed 39 runs in 37 balls. That was knocked over in relative ease by the double defending champions.
Tom Moody, in conversation with the commentary team during the game, was asked about that famous run chase against Trent Rockets at this venue just a few nights ago and that particular time out that changed the course of the game. He emphasised on the fact that all his players always know exactly what needs to be done in different situations of the game and all that remains is a bit of a reinforcement of certain tactical advantages and match-ups that can be used to develop a competitive edge.
He was also asked about the replacement for Rashid Khan. He confirms that the talks with Adam Zampa has advanced. The Australian leggie is keen on getting into the scheme of things and that might further strengthen the side going into the business end of the tournament. All teams are being sent a serious message with every match. Every challenge that gets thrown their way seems to be insignificant. The 3-peat is on!
15.3 Liam Dawson to Donovan Ferreira, SIX RUNS! THAT WILL FINISH THINGS OFF FOR THE MATCH! OVAL INVINCIBLES WIN! Flighted ever so slightly around off-stump. Ferreira clubs it off the front foot over the bowler and into the sight screen for a maximum!
15.2 Liam Dawson to Donovan Ferreira, OH! THAT WILL BE FOUR! Full and slow outside off. Ferreira went for the smash through the line on the front foot and inside-edged it through the legs of the keeper for a boundary!
15.1 Liam Dawson to Sam Billings, round the wicket, good length and on the pads. Worked away off the back foot to the left of short fine-leg for a single.
Luke Wood becomes the first London Spirit bowler to finish his full quota of 20 balls. His pace-off variations were picked by Donovan Ferreira as if the left arm pacer had sent him a telegram clearly stating it even before the ball was delivered.
15.0
14.5 Luke Wood to Donovan Ferreira, goes fuller on middle-and-leg. Ferreira swings hard and picks up a single to the right of mid-wicket for a run.
14.4 Luke Wood to Donovan Ferreira, THAT IS IN THE CROWD! Good length and pace off on middle-and-off. Slogged out of sight from the crease, well over deep mid-wicket!
14.3 Luke Wood to Donovan Ferreira, goes full on middle-and-off. Dragged away wide of long-on and that is good enough for the batters to take two.
14.2 Luke Wood to Donovan Ferreira, short and over off-stump. Ferreira tried to pull that one over deep square but failed to lay bat on ball.
14.1 Luke Wood to Donovan Ferreira, over the wicket, really full on off-stump. Ferreira jams the bat down on it and pushes it to mid-off.
20 runs needed from 30 balls! Luke Wood is back into the attack! Can he change the script here?
14.0
13.5 Jamie Overton to Donovan Ferreira, FALLS SAFELY! Hard length around off. The flat-batted swat on the up gets skewed up in the air. But Williamson does not quite get there from mid-off! One run taken.
13.5 Jamie Overton to Donovan Ferreira, short and WIDE over the head of the batter with the bounce outside off. Time to reload this one.
13.4 Jamie Overton to Donovan Ferreira, FOUR MORE! Went length and went straight. Ferreira belted it over wide mid-on from the crease to pick up a boundary first ball!
Donovan Ferreira batting at 6th position
Jordan Cox has been dismissed for 48 runs off 27 balls
