The Minecraft 1.20.5 update will drop soon, bringing some of the most exciting mobs and items to the game. After years of waiting, players are finally getting wolf armor to protect their tamed wolf. For many fans of the game, this update might be even better than the major 1.21 update. So what makes this update so special? Let’s find out.

Minecraft 1.20.5 is special

Minecraft has a ton of mobs; some like the cow and chicken are passive, while others, such as zombies and skeletons, are aggressive. But there’s one mob that stands out from the rest: the tamed wolf. Players can tame a wolf and make it a companion for their adventures.

For years, the only option players had when it came to tamed wolves was just a normal, white wolf. However, for all those who love having pets in the game, the 1.20.5 update brings eight different types of wolves. The best part is players can tame and keep all the wolves.

Here’s a list of all the different types of wolves that will be added to the game.

  • Rusty wolf: Spawns in the jungle biome.
  • Pale wolf (default wolf): Spawns in the taiga biome.
  • Striped wolf: Spawns in wooded badlands.
  • Snowy wolf: Spawns in groves.
  • Ashen wolf: Spawns in the snowy taiga.
  • Wood wolf: Spawns in forests.
  • Chestnut wolf: Spawns in old-growth spruce taiga.
  • Spotted wolf: Spawns in the savanna plateau.
  • Black wolf: Spawns in old-growth pine taiga.

As players can see, these wolves spawn in specific biomes and have different pack sizes. Some spawn in packs of two while others in packs of four. The snowy wolf is the rarest of all.

Apart from different types of wolves, players can now craft wolf armor using armadillo scutes (more on that later). The wolf armor can also be dyed, so that players can visually differentiate between their tamed wolves.

Coming to the next exciting thing, Minecraft is getting a new passive mob: the armadillo, a neutral mob that drops scutes. Players must approach this mob carefully as it can roll up when it senses any danger nearby.

The scutes are dropped naturally or when players use a brush on them. These scutes are used to make wolf armor and even repair it. So for all players who want to collect different wolves, this update is better than the Minecraft 1.21 update, which focuses more on combat and loot.
