History is replete with instances of Minecraft introducing features that seem completely unexpected and out of place. These features typically debut in snapshot updates, appealing to gamers who are eager to try out content still under development in a test version of the game.

However, the Super Secret Settings in Minecraft emerged as a mystery, making its first appearance with the 1.7.2 update, surprisingly not as part of a snapshot.

In this article, we delve into the history of the forgotten Minecraft super secret setting and discuss a method to add this feature to a more recent version of the game.

The Super Secret Settings was an option available in the game settings that played a random sound when clicked and cycled through a variety of built-in shaders.

While Minecraft Shaders is a popular mod that many players use nowadays, back then, they weren't as well-known. However, the shaders in the 1.7.2 update were nothing like the ones we see these days.

There were 21 different shader options players could cycle through, and most of them would noticeably change the appearance of the game, often in a less favorable way. Some examples of the shaders in the removed Super Secret Settings feature included effects that resembled old TV vision and near focus vision.

To cycle through the different shaders, players had to navigate to the options menu and click on the super secret settings option.

The developers were considerate enough to include a shortcut keybind (F4) to remove any active shader effects. This was particularly useful since cycling through 21 types of shaders to return to the default view could be cumbersome.

The easiest way to experience the original removed feature is to create a new installation in the game launcher and select version 1.7.2. This 11-year-old version of Minecraft comes with the infamous super secret setting option.

However, since shader technology has been mastered by the modding community, modders have recreated the super secret settings in newer versions of the game by creating a Fabric mod for it. Follow these simple steps to install the Super Secret Settings mod by creating a new Fabric installation:

Step 1: Download the official Fabric installer and launch it using Java.

Step 2: Select the game directory in the installer and version 1.20.

Step 3: Download the Super Secret Settings mod from CurseForge and move it to the game's application data folder. You can locate this folder by pressing WIN+R and entering "%appdata%/.minecraft/mods".

Once done, players can find and launch the new 1.20 Fabric installation in their launcher. After the game loads up, they can find the Super Secret Settings option in the options screen, and it will function just like the official feature present in version 1.7.2.
