In Minecraft's first live event of 2025 in March, Mojang announced a brand-new flying mob called happy ghast for the game's upcoming game drop, Chase the Skies. This creature was the complete opposite of a regular Nether ghast since it was friendly in nature and allowed players to fly on its back.

As time went by, the developers polished the mob for its official release with the game drop. It is now complete, and players can play with the creature soon.

Happy ghast will be released with the Minecraft Chase the Skies game drop on June 17, 2025. Here is more about the mob's announcement and features.

Happy ghast was announced on March 22, 2025. While the entire player base was waiting for Mojang to announce the new game drop, no one expected the studio to introduce the friendly variant of a ghast. The developers talked about how players can get the new mob, ride it, and use it in different ways.

Soon after the announcement, the happy ghast was released in both Java snapshots and Bedrock's beta/preview versions as a test feature. This gave thousands of players a chance to test the mob.

Happy ghast will only spawn when players manually grow it from a dried ghast. Dried ghast is a new block coming with the Chase the Skies update. It will either be found naturally generating near fossils in Soul Sand Valley or can be crafted using eight ghast tears and one soul sand block.

Once obtained, the dried ghast block needs to be kept underwater for 20 minutes to turn it into a ghastling, which is a new baby variant of happy ghasts. When the ghastling eats snowballs, it will grow into a happy ghast a lot faster than normal.

After the happy ghast grows fully, players need to place a harness on it, which is a saddle-like item that can be crafted using two glass blocks, one wool block, and three leather. If a happy ghast does not have a harness, it will be lured towards players holding one. A harnessed happy ghast can only be lured using snowballs.

After placing the harness, players can sit on top of the happy ghast and control its flight. Though its flying speed is quite low, it can still cover massive distances without any major danger.
