Jimmie Johnson spun wildly out of control Saturday in a practice session at Watkins Glen, but made a great save to avoid destroying his car.

Johnson wheel-hopped his Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet in Turn 1 during the first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup practice. Johnson's car spun around at a high rate of speed, but you could see the tires smoking as he stayed in the gas trying to avoid impact with the tire barrier.

Johnson eventually just barely touched the tire barrier, and was able to drive away with no visible damage. But the incident immediately evoked memories of Johnson's hard crash during a Busch Series race at Watkins Glen in 2000.
