He participated in races in California and Arizona driving USAC cars in the quarter midget series. He rose to success quickly and by 2006 he was already an accomplished driver. Bowman had achieved 9 national championship titles and 165 feature race wins by 2006. He won the USAC National Focus Midget Championship and the California Dirt Focus Midget Championship in 2008.

Bowman was named as the USAC National Midget Rookie of the Year in 2009. However, he had an unfortunate accident in 2010. Bowman suffered from a broken rib and clavicle. He made his debut in NASCAR in 2012 with the Xfinity Series. Alex Bowman drove for Turner Motorsports at the Chicagoland Speedway earning a 17th-place finish.
