For his early education, he went to Charlotte Christian School before turning his focus on full-time racing. He is the son of Coy Gibbs, a former NASCAR driver and executive of one of the teams, as well as the grandson of Joe Gibbs.

Ty Gibbs began his career racing go-karts on asphalt and dirt tracks in Mooresville, North Carolina. He won the 2019 IceBreaker 125 at Myrtle Beach Speedway. In 2017 and 2018, he drove for Marlowe Racing in the CARS Late Model Stock Series. Ty Gibbs achieved two pole positions and an average finish of 13.3. He also finished second at Anderson Speedway. Gibbs also participated in the ARCA Menards Series, where he won the championship in 2021. He won in 10 of the 20 races that made up the season. He was in the top five of almost all races until he crashed at the Talladega Superspeedway. Gibbs made his NASCAR debut with Joe Gibbs Racing in the Xfinity Series in 2021. He progressed rapidly enough and arrived in the Xfinity Series in 2021 and drove full-time for the Cup Series in 2023.
