Descent: A beginner's guide

Descent is an eerie horror-survival Roblox game in which players descend into an abandoned facility. The objectives include collecting scrap materials, selling them to earn cash, and restoring the facilities' electricity within three in-game days, all while avoiding multiple monsters and getting out of there in time.

The monsters are strong NPCs and must be dealt with by crouching, falling back, or hiding. Facing them can be intimidating for newbies, as there is no tutorial to help get started.

This guide will help simplify all aspects of the game.

Understanding the basics

When you first enter the game, you will spawn in a futuristic area with other players interested in exploring the eerie facility. Now, you can either play alone or team up with other players to form a group of up to four people (eight if you purchase the Bigger Lobby gamepass).

If you're new to the game, join a team to make facing the monsters and completing the in-game quests easier. Joining a team will also let you learn more about the game from experienced players.

Once you've formed a team, get inside the elevator and wait for the game to begin.

How to play Descent?

In the game, Robloxians must collect various scrap items and crates, sell them for in-game credits which they can use to purchase items like the Battery and the Nightvision Goggles, and eventually aim to restore the facility's and elevator's electricity and get out in one piece. They must also learn and avoid the multiple hostile NPCs while trying to complete the abovementioned objectives.

Descent has five monsters you must know about. Here's a rundown of their names and what you can do to avoid getting eliminated by them:

  • Fische - When you encounter this mob, press the crouch button and don't panic as it is blind and only has its hearing to take you down. Once it is out of your sight, go back to walking normally. This mob is the most common and the easiest to get rid of.
  • Blue Monkey - This mob isn't hostile and is supposed to be the solution to the hoarding bug in the game. This NPC is usually found with a valuable item in its hands and won't become hostile even if you take it.
  • Red Monkey - In contrast to the Blue Monkey, this one is hostile but can't do much on its own. However, it can still attract the Fische by screeching loudly.
  • Mannequin - This monster is based on the Coil-Head SCP-173 and is a neutral mob. It's not capable of doing any damage but will relentlessly follow you even if you're watching it. The only way to get rid of it is by retreating to the main floor via the elevator.
  • Barnabe - When you encounter this monster, don't look back and make a run for the elevator and hide in vents if you need to buy some time. One thing to note is that it only targets one player at a time, so if it is chasing someone else, get out of the way and safely make your way over to the elevator.

Players need to familiarize themselves with the basic controls in Descent. Below is a list of all the basic controls in the game:

  • WASD - Use these keys to move around.
  • Shift - Press this key to sprint. Continued sprinting may also take a toll on your in-game character and result in you draining your stamina.
  • Ctrl - Press this key whenever you have to crouch or hide in small spaces.
  • G - Use this key to throw.
  • E - Press this key to interact with items and switches.
  • Left-click - Press this key to use items.
  • Right-click - Press this key to zoom into objects or places.
  • Mouse - You can use the mouse to look around and aim.
