Hoag was born on 19th August 1992 in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada. His parents, Glenn Hoag and Donna Kastelic, played for the Canadian volleyball team. Hoag grew up around volleyball but he also played other sports, finally finding his focus in volleyball when he was 7 all under his father’s guidance. His elder brother Christopher Hoag was also a part of the Canadian Men’s national team. Hoag completed his schooling in Canada, where he polished his skills while participating in various local and national competitions. He opted for his post-secondary education at the Université de Sherbrooke in Quebec, where he continued to play volleyball at a more competitive level.

He also represented Canada at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, where the team acquired the 5th position and the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo where they finished 8th.
