5 Feuds for Randy Orton after WWE Backlash 2020

Going into his match against Edge at Backlash 2020, Randy Orton indeed was under a lot of pressure to perform. He had laid down the challenge for this encounter and more importantly, it had been dubbed as the "Greatest Wrestling Match Ever" by WWE.

While you can still argue about that tagline, the actual match was a brilliant one, at least in my opinion. The tussle between Edge and Orton lasted for about 45 minutes and featured a tribute to Howard Finkel, a host of finishing maneuvers of WWE legends, and the return of the Punt Kick.

Randy Orton reigns supreme at Backlash 2020

Eventually, The Viper came up trumps in the encounter and leveled the score with the Rated-R Superstar. In an unfortunate turn of events though, Edge also seemed to have suffered a serious injury at the event. So what's next for Randy Orton after this? Let us look at five possible opponents for him.

#5 Randy Orton vs Aleister Black

Aleister Black continues to shine
Aleister Black continues to shine

One Superstar who benefitted immensely during Paul Heyman's run as the Executive Director of RAW is Aleister Black. The Dutch Destroyer is currently feuding with Seth Rollins and his disciples but that will come to an end sometime in the near future.

Now, Black has been booked very strongly this past year and even though Bruce Prichard will be running the show now, one would expect the former's good run to continue. Many fans feel that Aleister Black is ready to enter the world title picture but there's definitely a queue in place. This is where Randy Orton fits in.

The Viper is now one of the legends of WWE himself and has worked with up-and-coming Superstars to elevate their game in the past. That's how he could help Black as well. And given the technical ability of both these Superstars, there's no doubt that the resulting contest would be a thrilling affair as well.

#4 Randy Orton vs Tommaso Ciampa

If you've been active on Twitter this past week, you're probably aware of the back-and-forth between Randy Orton and NXT's Tommaso Ciampa. Orton put up a tweet that was seemingly a jibe at the high frequency of leg slapping in NXT and Ciampa took offense, tweeting himself how he played The Viper's matches to put his daughter to sleep.

Orton even had some advice for The Blackheart in a recent interview with Sportskeeda's own Riju Dasgupta:

"And what I worry about Tommaso Ciampa, in particular, is with all these big injuries he’s had, and we’ve all had injuries, we all work hurt, we all wake up stiff after a good fight. But he needs to tell stories and slow it down and not think that the fans want to see him kill himself."

While there may not be plans for an immediate feud between the two, the seeds have already been sown for a showdown in the future. Ciampa's NXT status is also up in the air after he was squashed by Karrion Kross at TakeOver: In Your House. So if there are plans to move him up to RAW, a feud against Randy Orton would be a great way to start proceedings.

#3 Randy Orton vs Kevin Owens

Following his involvement at ringside during the United States Championship match at Backlash, it seems that Kevin Owens will be entangled with the likes of Angel Garza and Andrade for the time being. But for someone who secured a huge win over Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 36, this is definitely a step back and that's where Randy Orton comes as an aid.

Whenever KO does get done with his current feud, he needs a good opponent to thrust him back into the top card and there's no one better than Randy Orton for that at the moment. The duo had an altercation back in February when The Prizefighter interrupted The Viper during his supposed apology to Edge.

A match was scheduled later and Orton emerged victorious after an unconventionally quick three-count by the referee. So there's enough fodder for this to evolve into a full-blown feud on WWE TV. Both men are equally good storytellers so the WWE Universe would be in for a truly riveting experience.

#2 Randy Orton vs Daniel Bryan

Now I know that Daniel Bryan is on SmackDown and Randy Orton is commissioned to RAW, and yes, even with the brand-to-brand invitational rule in place, an extended feud between the two seems out of place.

But do remember that AJ Styles was recently traded to SmackDown from the Red brand for future considerations. Given the stature of The Phenomenal One, it's kind of imperative that the executives over at the USA Network would ask for a big name in return themselves and this star could be Daniel Bryan himself.

The American Dragon is a top player in the company so in case the trade does happen and he moves to RAW, there will be no better person to greet him than The Apex Predator himself.

Both Bryan and Orton are no strangers to each other and have been involved in some of the greatest matches in WWE history, especially the triple threat affair for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania XXX. And it's becoming increasingly evident that WWE is putting their veterans to work to get the ratings back. So this rivalry could be renewed as well.

#1 Randy Orton vs Drew McIntyre

Randy Orton is one of the greatest Superstars in WWE history. He's a 13-time world champion but it's been some time since he last held the WWE Championship. He challenged for the title when it was held by Kofi Kingston last year but was unsuccessful in his quest.

With a monumental victory against Edge, Randy Orton has once again proved to the world just how good he is. So big opportunities should follow for The Apex Predator, right? Keep in mind that the current WWE Champion Drew McIntyre himself is in favor of working with Orton, revealing the following in another recent interview:

"There's a reason I want to work with him for the world title because I want to learn. Because there aren't too many guys around anymore that have learned from the best. Been around for a long time and can really pull you up. So, anybody that works with him will absolutely benefit."

Yes, McIntyre only retained his WWE title at Backlash after Lana's appearance distracted Bobby Lashley. So The All Mighty could ask for a rematch. Having said that, there's no reason why Randy Orton couldn't be next in line for a shot at the WWE Championship.
