David Riley, an American college basketball coach, was recently announced as the new head coach of the Washington State Cougars team. The 35-year-old has held multiple roles at Eastern Washington University in the past 13 seasons. Riley's coaching journey began at EWU in 2011, where served as a graduate assistant for the first two years and was later elevated to Director of Basketball Operations for one season. Recognized as one of the youngest basketball coaches in Division I college, Riley went to the Whitworth University where he was a three-time All-Northwest Conference first-team selection. He concluded his collegiate career with 1,664 points, ranked fourth all-time in the program’s history.

Since 2014, Riley served as an assistant under Jim Hayford and Shantay Legans and the program achieved unparalleled success until 2021 when he took over the head coaching role. Riley began his head coaching journey in 2021 and the Eagles went 18-16 in his debut season when he was recognized as a finalist for the Joe B. Hall Award. He led the program to two consecutive Big Sky regular-season titles in 2023 and 2024 and was also honored with two Big Sky Coach of the Year honors. After 13 seasons with Eastern Washington, Riley decided to sign a six-year contract with the Washington State University.

Renee Riley, David's mother, has played a significant role in his career as a basketball coach. She was an English major at Whitworth College. Ordained in 1986, she was the minister at the Bellevue, Wash., Alberta, Canada, and Christ United Presbyterian Church in San Jose. She was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in 2004 and passed away at the age of 45 in 2005.
