Max Shulga is a guard for the VCU Rams and plays as a junior in the 2024-2025 season. Shulga hails from Kyiv, Ukraine, and recorded a career-high of 29 points against Air Force on February 14, 2023, while setting season highs of 10 assists against Utah Tech on December 1, 2022, and 10 rebounds against Nevada on February 18, 2023. Shulga showed his shooting skill by hitting five threes against Air Force and shooting 11 of 13 from the free throw line against LMU on December 10, 2022. Shulga had a remarkable season as a freshman, playing in 23 games and averaging 6.8 minutes per game. He registered a total of 37 points, with a season-high eight points against Wyoming. Shulga shot percentage by 34.2% from the field and recorded 42 rebounds, including a season-high eight against Nevada.

Before joining Utah State, Max represented the Ukraine national team. At the 2019 U18 FIBA European Championships, he scored in double figures in all but two of his games there, including 22 points against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Shulga also scored 21 points, and 16 rebound double-doubles against North Macedonia. He averaged 13.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 2.0 steals per game, finishing the tournament as the most efficient shooter with 61.9% overall and 52.9% from three-pointer range. He was expected to play for the U20 and U18 Ukraine teams in 2020 but due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the European Championship was cancelled. He attended the Basketball School of Excellence in Torrelodones, Spain, registering 16 points per game in the league, and was the league leader in free throw attempts, averaging 3.8 per contest.
