Smith redshirted his first collegiate season and played in two games. On November 12, he made his collegiate debut at Ohio State. In 2022, he was among the 33 student-athletes who made their collegiate debut. He played 61 snaps and made his collegiate debut at right tackle.
He started all 12 of his games as a left tackle during his redshirt freshman season. Against No. 3/4 Ohio State, he started his first game as a collegiate left tackle. He started at left tackle against Indiana State and contributed to the offense's 558 total yards of offense and five rushing touchdowns.
