The Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the most famous Twenty20 leagues across the globe. The tournament has completed 10 years, producing some memorable cricket during that duration.

We have seen some of the greatest batsmen in the world plying their trade in the IPL, including Chris Gayle, Adam Gilchrist, Ricky Ponting, Sachin Tendulkar, Jacques Kallis and Kumar Sangakkara.

Modern-day batting superstars like Aaron Finch, Martin Guptill, Andre Russell, Ben Stokes, Steve Smith and Kane Williamson have also played a part in the IPL journey. Here in this article, we are going to look at the most successful batsmen in the history of the league.

#5 David Warner

The left-hander from New South Wales is the most successful overseas batsman in the history of the IPL. David Warner captained Sunrisers Hyderabad to IPL glory in 2016, defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final to lift the coveted trophy.

Warner has scored 4014 runs in the IPL, the most by any overseas batsman. He has hit 3 hundreds and 36 fifties, the most fifties by any batsman in IPL history. His average of 40.54 is the second best in IPL history (min. 2000 runs), with only Chris Gayle possessing a better average.

At a phenomenal strike rate of 142, Warner scored at least 500 runs in the last four editions of the tournament, showing his consistency. In 2016, the Aussie scored a mammoth 848 runs with nine fifties to take SRH to the title. He is expected to be back in IPL 2018.

#4 Gautam Gambhir

The left-hander from Delhi is one of the most successful batsmen and captains in the history of the IPL. He led Kolkata Knight Riders to glory in 2012 and 2014, defeating Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab respectively in the finals.

In 148 IPL games, Gambhir has scored a massive 4132 runs including 35 fifties, the second most after David Warner. At an average of 31.54 and a strike rate of 124.6, Gambhir has been a consistent player for KKR over the last few years.

The southpaw has scored at least 275 runs in every IPL season so far and 400+ runs five times. As a captain, he has a win percentage of 58.48, the best in the history of the IPL (min. 75 games).

Rohit Sharma is the most successful captain in the history of the IPL with three titles. He led Mumbai Indians to glory in 2013, 2015 and 2017. Under his captaincy, Mumbai have been one of the most consistent IPL teams.

As a batsman, Rohit has scored 4207 runs in the IPL at an average of 32.61 and a strike rate of 130.89 with one hundred and 32 fifties. He batted at various positions for Mumbai Indians and managed to score at least 330 runs in every IPL season since its inception.

He is third on the list of the highest run-getters in IPL history and his captaincy record will make him one of the most successful players in the marquee competition.

#2 Virat Kohli

No list of batting records is complete without Virat Kohli's name. One of the most successful Indian batsmen of all time, Kohli has been a consistent match winner in the IPL too. He has represented Royal Challengers Bangalore in all the 10 IPL seasons so far.

In 149 IPL games, the Indian captain has scored 4418 runs at an average of 37.44 and a strike rate of 130 with 30 fifties and four hundreds. He has the second most centuries in the IPL, after Chris Gayle.

SInce 2010, Kohli has scored at least 300 runs in every IPL season and 500+ on four occasions. The Indian skipper holds the record for the most runs scored in a single IPL campaign. He fell 27 runs short of the coveted 1000-mark during the 2016 IPL when RCB finished runners-up to Rohit Sharma's Mumbai Indians.

#1 Suresh Raina

Suresh Raina is the most successful batsman in Indian Premier League history. Raina started his IPL journey under the captaincy of MS Dhoni in Chennai Super Kings and is currently the highest run-getter in the IPL.

Raina has played the most number of matches in IPL history and has amassed a whopping 4540 runs. He has an average of 34.13 and a strike rate of 139 with 31 fifties and one hundred. Raina played one of the best innings in T20 history when he smashed 87 runs off 25 balls against Kings XI Punjab during the 2014 IPL.

A prolific no. 3 batsman for CSK, he has scored at least 370 runs in every IPL season so far. He helped CSK to two IPL titles, in 2010 and 2011, scoring 520 and 438 runs respectively.
