The Indian Premier League is no doubt the most popular T20 league in world cricket. It has fetched incredible interest right from the first season because of the popularity of the T20 format as well as the presence of all the big names from the world of cricket and the exciting young talent coming through from India.

Cricket fans from all over the world keep an eye on the contests and the records which are created and broken every day and most of us are well aware of those significant records.

However, there are some records which go unnoticed and are forgotten in due course of time.

In this article, we will have a look at the few unknown and interesting records from the Indian Premier League.

#5 A fifty and three-wicket haul in a single match

In T20, if an all-rounder can bowl his quota of four overs without giving away too many runs and score some valuable runs with the bat, he has done the job for his team.

Scoring a fifty as well as taking four wickets in a match is a rare feat and has only been accomplished 12 times in the past 11 years of IPL.

Yuvraj Singh has done it three times. He did it for the first time while playing for the Kings XI Punjab in 2009. With the ball, he took 3/22 and scored 50 runs from 34 balls. He achieved the feat again while playing for Pune Warriors in 2011.

While batting, he scored a brilliant 66* from 32 balls and then took 4/22 with the ball. He achieved the feat a remarkable third time for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2014. While batting, he blasted a 38-ball 83 run knock and took 4/33 with the ball.

#4 2500+ Runs & 50+ Wickets

As stated earlier, IPL has had some great all-rounders over all the 11 seasons. But scoring consistently as well as taking wickets at the same time is not an easy job.

Not only do you have to be skillful but your fitness level has to be top class because there’s not much rest between the matches.

Scoring 2500+ runs and taking 50+ wickets is a big feat. Only Shane Watson has managed to achieve this among all the big names in the IPL.

Watson has been an integral part of the IPL since the very first season and has offered his services to three teams.

During the course of 11 seasons, he has played 117 matches and has scored 3177 runs at an impressive average of 32 while striking at 142.

With the ball, he hasn’t bowled much in the last couple of seasons but still has 93 wickets to his name while giving runs at 7.93 rpo.

No other player is even close to achieving this feat. The second best is Kieron Pollard who has 2477 runs and has 56 wickets.

#3 Scoring more than 100 runs in boundaries in one innings

Chris Gayle scored 154 runs in boundaries against Pune Warriors

IPL has seen as many as 52 centuries over the years. But there have been a few destructive innings where a batsman has scored more than 100 runs through boundaries only.

It has happened eight times. Universe Boss Chris Gayle has done it three times while AB De Villiers has done it twice and three players (Sanath Jayasuriya, Brendon McCullum, Rishabh Pant) have done it once each.

The first time Gayle did it was when he scored 128* off 62 balls vs Delhi Daredevils in 2012. He hit 13 sixes and seven fours, hence scoring 102 off those 128 runs in boundaries.

He achieved this astonishing feat for the second time in 2013 when he blasted 175* off 66 balls vs Pune Warriors.

In that he innings, he blasted 17 sixes and hit 13 fours and scored 154 of 175 runs in boundaries.

Gayle managed to repeat the feat again in 2015 against Kings XI Punjab when he scored 117 runs off 57 balls. He sent the ball over the ropes 12 times and hit seven fours, hence scoring exactly 100 runs in boundaries.

#2 Bowlers who conceded at least 55 runs as well as have a five-wicket haul

There haven’t been many five-wicket hauls in IPL as it is very hard for a bowler to do that in a T-20 game.

During 11 seasons, only twenty five-wicket hauls have been registered while there are many instances of a bowler giving away more than 50 runs.

However, there are few names that have a five-wicket hauls to their name but have also gone for more than 55 runs in some other match.

Five players have this weird record against their name.

  • Ishant Sharma – 5/12 vs Kochi in 2011 (DC), 4/66 vs Chennai in 2013 (SRH)

  • Amit Mishra - 5/17 vs Deccan Chargers in 2008 (DD), 2/56 vs Kings XI in 2014 (SRH)
  • Lasith Malinga – 5/13 vs Delhi in 2013 (MI), 4/58 vs Kings XI in 2017 (MI)
  • Ravindra Jadeja – 5/12 vs Deccan Chargers in 2012 (CSK), 4/57 vs Royal Challengers in 2017 (GL)
  • James Faulkner – 4/20 & 4/16 vs Sunrisers in IPL 2013 (RR), 4/55 vs Delhi in 2015 (RR)

#1 Bowler with the most number of bowled dismissals

In T20s, a bowler is more likely to take wickets by getting the batsman caught either in the outfield or on the boundary line because more often than not, it’s the case of a batsman giving away his wicket while trying to hit boundaries than the bowler deceiving him.

However, there is one bowler who has taken 41% of his IPL wickets by getting the batsman bowled.

Lasith Malinga of Mumbai Indians, who is arguably the greatest bowler in the history of IPL, has 154 wickets to his name. On 63 of those 154 instances, he knocked the batsman over while on 71 occasions he got the batsman caught.

63 bowled dismissals seem even more astonishing when you realize the second best bowler in terms of bowled wickets has only 34 of them.

Malinga was known for his deadly yorkers during the death overs and had extremely deceptive slower balls. It was the reason why he knocked over so many batsmen.
