England vs Sri Lanka rivalry in World Cup started in the 1983 Cricket World Cup. Both the teams were placed in Group A. They played each other first on 11 June 1983 at Taunton. England won the toss and batted first. They built a mountain of a score, 334, for the Sri Lankan batsmen to chase. David Gower scored a century for England. Chasing the huge target, Sri Lanka went down for 286 runs with Vic marks taking a five-wicket haul. Their second encounter in that World Cup was in Leeds which England won quite easily by 9 wickets. Here also England won the toss, but this time decided to field first. They bowled out the Sri Lankans for a low score of 138 runs and easily chased it down in less than 25 overs.
These teams again met each other twice in the next World Cup in 1987. Like the last World Cup, England won both the matches. The first match was played on 17 October in Peshawar. England won the toss and elected to bat first. Half-centuries from Graham Gooch and Allan Lamb propelled their innings to 296 runs at the end of 50 overs. The Sri Lankan innings was interrupted by rain and their target was revised to 267 runs. But they were only able to score 158 runs and lost the match by 108 runs. The second fixture was on 30 October in Pune. Sri Lanka batted first after winning the toss. They put 218 on the board which was easily chased by English batsmen.

Their next faceoff in a World Cup was on 9 March 1992 at Easter Oval, Ballarat, Australia. England scored 280 runs after winning the toss and batting first. Chasing a target of 281, all the Sri Lankan were in the pavilion at the end of 44 over after scoring just 174.
In the 1996 World Cup, both the teams met in the Quarter-Finals stage. England won the toss and elected to bat first. They put 235 runs on the board with Phi; DeFreitas scoring a half-century. In response, Sri Lanka showed a superb batting performance, led by Sanath Jayasuriya who scored 82 runs and helped his team chase the target in the 41st over. Sri Lanka eventually went on to win the 1996 World Cup, their first one.
In the 1999 World Cup, these two played the first match of the tournament against each other at Lord’s. It was an easy win for the hosts. After winning the toss, England decided to field first. A four-wicket spell from Alan Mullaly helped England bowl out their opponents for 204 runs. They easily chased the target with Graeme Hick scoring an unbeaten 73.
These sides again faced each in a ICC World Cup match on 4 April 2007 in what was a very close encounter, in the Super 8 stage. Bowling first after winning the toss, England was able to restrict Sri Lanka for 235 runs. Mahela Jayawardene and Upul Tharanga scored crucial half-centuries for their team. Chasing 236, England lost two wickets quite early. Ian Bell and Kevin Pietersen got their run chase back on track. But they again lost 4 wickets in quick succession while scoring just 32 runs in that period. Paul Nixon and Ravi Bopara got their team very close with them needing 12 runs in the final over. With 3 needed off the last ball, Dilhara Fernando bowled a great delivery to get the bails off and win the match for his side.
In the 2011 Cricket World Cup, both the teams faced each other in the Quarter-Finals stage. Sri Lanka dominated throughout the match. England won the toss and decided to bat first. They put 229 runs on the board. The Sri Lankan opening pair of Dilshan and Upul Tharanga crushed the English bowling attack and scored unbeaten centuries to give their team a win by 10 wickets.

In the next World Cup in 2015, both the teams were in Pool A. They played each other at Wellington. The match was a high scoring affair. England scored 209 runs, with Joe Root scoring a ton, at the loss of 6 wickets after winning the toss. In response, the Sri Lankan batsmen never gave any chance to English bowlers and chased down the target at the loss of only one wicket. Kumar Sangakkara and Lahiru Thirimanne scored unbeaten centuries.
Their latest World Cup encounter was on 22 June 2019 at Leeds. The match was a tight one and saw the biggest upset of the ICC World Cup 2019 so far. Sri Lanka won the toss and batted first. A gutsy inning of 85 runs from Angelo Mathews helped Sri Lanka put 232 runs on the board. England was expected to easily chase the target but exceptional bowling performance Lasith Malinga and Dhananjaya de Silva saw the English side getting bowled out 20 runs short of the target.
