"New death over king" - Fans erupt as Akash Madhwal takes four-wicket haul in must-win game for MI against SRH

Akash Madhwal
Akash Madhwal has scalped eight wickets in six games for MI this season so far.

Akash Madhwal starred with the ball for Mumbai Indians (MI) against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in their must-win game at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, May 21. The medium pacer emerged as the pick of Mumbai bowlers, returning with figures of 4/37.

Madhwal provided the hosts with their first breakthrough by dismissing the dangerous-looking Vivrant Sharma. He then gave away just six runs each in the 17th and 19th overs and took the wickets of the well-settled Mayank Agarwal, Heinrich Klaasen, and Harry Brook to bring MI back into the contest.

Fans on Twitter hailed Akash Madhwal for his promising bowling performance. One user tweeted:

"New death over king."

Here are some of the other Twitter reactions:

Akash Madhwal credited his hard work in the nets for his success. He reckoned that MI will chase 200+ for the third time this season at home.

Speaking during the mid-match show, he said:

“I just focused on execution. The communication with Rohit was really good. Practice is the key to bowl Yorkers. Vivrant batted really well. On this ground, 200+ scores get hunted down. We've done it twice this season, hope we can chase it down.”

Madhwal has, so far, scalped eight wickets in six games at an economy rate of 9. The Mumbai-based franchise bought him for Rs 20 lakh at the IPL 2023 mini auction.

Mayank Agarwal and Vivrant Sharma power SRH to 200 despite Akash Madhwal’s heroics

A clinical batting performance from Mayank Agarwal and Vivrant Sharma guided SRH to 200/5 in their allotted 20 overs.

Mayank scored 83 runs off 46 balls at a strike rate of 180.43, including eight boundaries and four sixes. Vivrant hit 69 off 47 deliveries, including nine fours and a couple of maximums. Together, the duo shared a 140-run partnership for the opening wicket.

Heinrich Klaasen and skipper Aiden Markram also chipped in with scores of 18 (13) and 13* (7), respectively.

For MI, Chris Jordan took a solitary wicket, barring Akash Madhwal’s brilliance with the ball.

Now, the onus will be on MI to chase 201 as fast as possible to stay alive in the race to the IPL 2023 playoffs. They will also be reliant on weather gods since RCB are also in contention for a playoff berth, but their last group-stage game might get washed out due to rain.
