IPL 2017: Ravichandran Ashwin reveals whether he lost his kitbag on his IPL debut
There were some doubts that arose following the confusion surrounding Aaron Finch's kitbag.
Ravichandran Ashwin may not be playing in IPL 2017 but that hasn't stopped the Indian off-spinner from being in the news during the tenth edition of the tournament. After Gujarat Lions batsman Aaron Finch missed the game against Mumbai Indians due to a misplaced kit bag, there were some doubts about whether the same happened before Ashwin's IPL debut for CSK
The Indian international promptly confirmed on Twitter that he didn't lose his kit bag and explained what exactly transpired when he made his IPL debut. It was the first match of the second edition of the Indian Premier League that was held in South Africa and Chennai Super Kings faced Mumbai Indians.
In response to a question on Twitter, Ashwin first had a laugh and then soon clarified that he didn’t lose his kit bag even though he neither bowled or batted on debut for CSK.
In the opening game of IPL 2009, Chennai Super Kings took on Mumbai Indians at Cape Town. CSK won the toss and elected to field but Ashwin, who was selected as the solitary spinner in the side didn't bowl a single over. MI finished with 165/7 in their 20 overs courtesy fo a fifty from Sachin Tendulkar and a cameo from Abhishek Nayar.
In response, CSK could only manage 146/7 and Ashwin, who was slated to come in at No.11 didn’t get an opportunity to showcase his talent with the bat either. He would only go on to play one more match in the season for the side. He proved his worth and became the No.1 spinner in the years to come and is now a regular for India across all formats.
After an impressive performance in the win over Ashwin's side, Rising Pune Supergiant, where he scored an unbeaten 33 to seal his side’s first win of the tournament, Finch would have been looking to the game against MI. Unfortunately, a lost kitbag meant he was robbed of that opportunity and replaced by Jason Roy as the Lions lost the game in the final over.
