IPL 2018: 5 Big-ticket signings who failed in this week

Pandey has been struggling at SRH

Another week of this IPL has ticked off and it has once again been another exciting week. Once again there have been a lot of tight finishes and matches have gone down to the wire.

In this week, Sunrisers Hyderabad have reversed the trend and have defended a sub-par score three times.

On the other hand, Chennai Super Kings chased 206 against Royal Challengers Bangalore despite being 74/4 at one stage. Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils have got back to winning ways.

Hence, there have been some brilliant individual performances throughout the week. MS Dhoni’s unbeaten 70 to take CSK home against RCB, Shreyas Iyer’s excellent 93 on captaincy debut, Rashid Khan’s superb display while defending totals have been some of the highlights of the week.

However, there have also been under-par performances from some of the big names. Hence, we look at 5 big-ticket signing who failed to perform in this week of the IPL.

#5 Manish Pandey

Manish Pandey has had a quite disappointing season so far. Despite scoring two fifties, he has largely struggled and hasn’t been able to the kind of impact Sunrisers would’ve expected.

Pandey has become a regular member of the Indian T20 squad. Coming into this IPL the Karnataka batsman was in very good form.

In 2018, he has scored 255 runs at an average of 85.00 in 7 innings for India. However, he failed to replicate the form for the Hyderabad franchise.

After an indifferent first couple of weeks, Pandey bagged a duck against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in SRH’s fifth game.

He then scratched his way to 16 against Mumbai Indians. He did score a 54 against Kings XI Punjab but he largely struggled in that innings as he took 51 balls to score that 54. But that resulted in a win for SRH.

He ended the week with another scratchy innings as he made 16 in 15 deliveries against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur.

Overall, Pandey has scored at a low strike-rate of 112.85 in this IPL and was disappointing in this week.

#4 Jaydev Unadkat

Jaydev Unadkat has been one of the
Jaydev Unadkat has been one of the most expensive bowlers in this IPL

There was big news when Jaydev Unadkat was the second most expensive player in this year’s auction.

It was largely on the back of last year’s performance where he took 24 wickets in 12 games. He bowled really well in the powerplay and at the death.

His ability to control the run-flow at the death with his variations at excellent.

The Saurashtra pacer started the tournament decently but he has leaked a lot of runs. He has had no control at all and has given away runs almost everytime he’s come onto bowl.

He had figures of 1/31 in the game against Mumbai Indians where he started well but he was once again poor at the death.

After almost a week’s break, Unadkat’s performance became worse where he gave away 33 runs in three overs against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

In an innings where SRH scored at a rate of about 7.5, the 26-year-old left-arm pacer went at 11 runs per over.

Thus, it has been a poor week and a poor IPL so far for Unadkat.

#3 Glenn Maxwell

Glenn Maxwell
Glenn Maxwell hasn't quite fired in this IPL

Glenn Maxwell is undoubtedly blockbuster player and hence attracted a lot of bid in the auction this and eventually was bought by Delhi Daredevils for Rs 9 crore. However, he hasn’t quite fired in this season.

Maxwell arrived late in India and struggled in his first couple of innings before he scored a fluent 47 against Kolkata Knight Riders and it looked like the 29-year-old Aussie was getting back to form.

However, Maxwell again disappointed in this third week of the IPL. After that innings of 47, Maxwell has looked scratchy. He’s had scores of 4, 12 and 27.

Maxwell has looked iffy in almost every innings and his scratchy form has affected DD as they haven’t quite been able to finish big.

#2 Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya has really struggled with the bat in this IPL

Hardik Pandya has been a big disappointment in this IPL. Despite having decent outings with the ball, he has been in poor with the bat. He’s scored just 61 runs in six innings at a strike-rate of 107.01.

In this week he was quite poor with the bat. After scoring just four against Rajasthan Royals, he really struggled to get going in the game against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

He scored a 19-ball three in Mumbai’s chase of 119. He just couldn’t connect with his slogs neither could he turn the strike over.

In the game against Chennai Super Kings, he was expensive with the ball (1/39 in four overs) but he fared better with the bat as he struck an unbeaten 13 and gave skipper Rohit Sharma good company.

Hardik Pandya has been a big miss in this IPL and MI will be hoping he can turn things around in the coming weeks.

#1 Aaron Finch

Aaron Finch has not gone past the 20-run mark in this IPL

Aaron Finch was picked up by Kings XI Punjab for Rs 6.2 crore in the auction this year. But he has had a terrible time from the time he has landed in India.

Yes, he has been batting in the middle-order, but his returns have been very poor.

His first two innings were shockers as he was out for first-ball ducks (LBW on both occasions).

He did score an unbeaten 14 in six balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Mohali and it looked as though he was regaining his touch.

But once again he failed to perform in this week. He opened the batting against Delhi Daredevils when Chris Gayle was rested.

However, despite going back to his preferred position, Finch failed as he could manage just two and let go of a good opportunity.

The 31-year-old Victoria opener returned to the middle-order when Gayle was back. He batted at No. 5 in the game against SRH in Hyderabad and had the opportunity to take KXIP home but he fell trying to slog and was out for another single-digit score.

It has been a poor IPL for Finch so far.
