IPL 2018: 5 franchises that were once part of the IPL fraternity

A total of 13 franchises have played in the ten-year history of the cash-rich Indian Premier League. Out of these, five franchises are now defunct. But these teams had their own unforgettable moments, history and fan-base.

Several top players of the game played for them over the last decade. But due to various reasons, these five teams are no longer a part of the IPL family. Let us now look at those five franchises, their history and what led to their termination and withdrawal from the richest cricket league, the IPL.

The BCCI wanted to add two new teams for the fourth edition of the IPL in 2011. Hence, the auction for expansion of teams took place in 2010, in which the two highest bids made were chosen. The Rendezvous Sports World chose Kochi as its venue, after making the second highest bid.

The franchise participated in only one IPL season, 2011(Season 4). Sri Lankan legend Mahela Jayawardene captained the side, and Geoff Lawson was their coach. Kochi played their home games at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi and Holkar Stadium in Indore.

The team had several star players like Brendon McCullum, Brad Hodge, Muttiah Muralitharan and Ravindra Jadeja. In the 14 matches they had played in the 2011 season, they won six and lost eight matches, with a winning percentage of 42.86.

The Kochi Tuskers finished eight in the table after the league games. In September 2011, the BCCI terminated the Kochi franchise as they failed to pay the total franchise fee that was due.

The Deccan Chronicle Group owned the Hyderabad franchise. The Chargers played five seasons in the IPL, from 2008-2012. Adam Gilchrist captained the side for the first three editions of the IPL. In the first season, the team finished at the bottom of the table.

Though they had several star players like Shahid Afridi, Chaminda Vaas, Herschelle Gibbs and Andrew Symonds Chargers managed to win only two out of the 14 league games. In the second season though, they surprised everyone by claiming the title in South Africa defeating the Royal Challengers in the finals at Johannesburg.

The left-arm seamer, RP Singh won the Purple Cap claiming 23 wickets in the tournament. In the 2010 season, they were forced to play their home game outside Hyderabad due to the Telengana issues. In the next two seasons they failed to reach the playoffs. In September 2012, the BCCI terminated the franchise over a financial dispute with the franchise owners.

It was one of the two new franchises included for the 2011 IPL ,along with the Kochi franchise. The Sahara Adventure Sports Limited owned this team. In the first season, they played their home games at the DY Patil stadium in Navi Mumbai.

Yuvraj Singh captained the side during the 2011 season, where they finished 9th among the ten teams. Sourav Ganguly took over the reigns in the next IPL, as Yuvraj Singh was recovering from cancer at the time.

They finished at the bottom of the table after winning just four out of their 16 league games. For the 2013 season, the Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews was made their Captain. It was their last season in the IPL, and they finished 8th in the table. In May, 2013 they withdrew from the IPL due to the financial disputes with the BCCI.

After the two-year suspension of the CSK and RR in 2015, the BCCI added two new teams to replace them for the next two seasons. One of those were the Gujarat Lions, owned by Keshav Bansal of Intex Technologies.

They played two seasons in the IPL-2016 and 2017. Suresh Raina was their skipper, and Brad Hodge was their head coach. The franchise comprised several big players like Dwayne Bravo, Ravindra Jadeja, Brendon McCullum and Aaron Finch.

In their inaugural season in 2016, they finished on top of the league standings, winning nine out of the 14 matches. Eventually, they lost in the playoffs to the RCB and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

In the 2017 season, they finished seventh in the league table, winning just four out of their 14 games and failing to replicate their previous season form.

Rising Pune Supergiant

This was one of the two franchises formed to replace the suspended CSK and RR for 2016 and 2017 IPL. MS Dhoni captained the side in the 2016 season. The RP-Sanjiv Goenka group owned the franchise from Pune.

The former New Zealand skipper, Stephen Fleming was their coach. In the 2016 season, the RPS finished at seventh position in the league table after winning just five out of their 14 matches.

In the 2017 season, they made a remarkable comeback, finishing as the runners-up to the Mumbai Indians. Pune eventually lost to MI by a margin of one run. Australian skipper Steven Smith captained them in the 2017 season.
