IPL 2018 : 5 Underrated Overseas Batsmen in the IPL

Lendl Simmons was the highest scorer for Mumbai Indians in 2015

We are in the 11th season of the IPL and every year many overseas batsmen come to the IPL.

Explosive batsmen like Chris Gayle and Brendon McCullum set the IPL on fire and are the superstar players.

But some of the overseas batsmen don't get the credit they deserve. So let’s look at the five underrated overseas batsmen in the IPL over the years.

#5 Lendl Simmons (MI)

Lendl Simmons was the leading run scorer for Mumbai Indians in 2015 when they won the IPL.

He used to give them excellent starts up at the top of the order. Lendl Simmons is one of the cleanest strikers of the ball.

In the 29 matches, which he has played for MI he has a decent strike rate of 126.64 and an outstanding average of 39.96.

He was an integral part of the title-winning team in 2015. He scored 540 runs at an average of 45 in that season. He has even scored a brilliant century in the IPL.

It was unfortunate that he was not picked by any team in this year's auction. But he has been an entertainer in the IPL for the past few years and so he is slotted in at No.5 as an underrated batsman.

#4 Jean-Paul Duminy (MI, DC, SRH, DD)

JP Duminy was picked by MI in 2009 and now is back with them

JP Duminy has been one of the most consistent performers in the IPL for many franchises. He was first picked by MI in 2009 and now is back with them this year.

He is one of those batsmen who will keep scoring runs irrespective of the situation in which his team is. Duminy was the leading run-scorer for Delhi Daredevils in 2014 when he scored over 400 runs at an average of 51.25.

He has almost 2000 runs in the IPL at an average of 39.86 and a strike rate of 124.87. He even captained Delhi for a season or two.

This year MI once again showed faith in him and picked him as a backup batsman. It would be good to watch him if he gets some games.

#3 Shaun Marsh (KXIP)

Shaun Marsh was the winner of the orange cap in the very first season of the IPL

Shaun Marsh won the orange cap in the very first season of the IPL for KXIP. Interestingly, he is one of the few overseas players to play for only one franchise.

He scored 616 runs at an astonishing average of 68.44 and helped KXIP finish second on the points table.

He is a rare overseas player who plays spin quite well. Marsh is an excellent timer of the ball and relies on timing rather than power.

He has scored close to 2500 runs in the IPL at a career average of almost 40. His knock of 115 against RR in 2008 was magnificent to watch.

Unfortunately, he wasn’t picked in this year’s auction, but he is a class act and would have slotted into any team easily.

#2 Michael Hussey (CSK, MI)

Michael Hussey has been an integral part of the CSK unit over the years

Mr. Cricket as he is known as one of the best batsmen to have played for CSK in the IPL. He along with Suresh Raina took them to the final in the 2013 IPL season.

He scored 733 runs in just 17 games that season. He started his IPL career with a bang when he scored 116 off just 54 balls against KXIP in 2008.

He has scored close to 2000 runs in the IPL with an average of 38.76. He always has a cool head on his shoulders.

Hussey and Vijay used to give them some really good starts for CSK. It is good to see he is back with CSK in some form or the other and so he is slotted in at No.2 as an underrated batsman.

#1 Hashim Amla (KXIP)

Hashim Amla was on fire in the 2017 IPL season

It was really disappointing for many, to see that Hashim Amla went unsold in the 2018 IPL Auction.

He was absolutely brilliant in 2017 for KXIP. Many did not consider him as a T20 batsman, but he proved everybody wrong by scoring two hundreds in one season.

Yes, he smashed two centuries and scored over 400 runs at a staggering average of 60 and a strike rate of 145.

He has played only 16 IPL games but has scored more than 500 runs at an excellent average of 44.38 and a strike rate of over 140.

Even though the sample size is less he has shown that he is capable of performing in the IPL. It is a treat to watch Amla bat in any format and so without any doubt, he is the most underrated overseas batsmen in the IPL.
