What's the story?`

During the match between the Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore, a rare technical gaffe raised a few questions.

During the 18th over of the match as Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Umesh Yadav to add salt to the Royal Challengers Bangalore's wounds, the umpire decided to go up to check for a no-ball. However, replays suggested that Bumrah's foot was way behind the line and not close to being a no-ball.

This led to people questioning the umpire as to why he even sent the decision upstairs.

However, a few Twitters users noticed that Umesh Yadav was at the non-striker's end in the replay which was shown, which meant that the wrong replay was put up on the screen.

In case you didn't know...

The technical gaffe did not have a say in the final result of the match as RCB had already more or less lost the match by then as they required over 77 runs in 13 deliveries, which they only could have achieved if they had hit a six on every delivery.

Mumbai Indians ended up winning the match by 46 runs and achieving their first win of the season.

The details

This technical error occurs when the replay operator clicks twice, thus going to the replay of the previous delivery instead of the current one. The third-umpire should have been the one to correct this but these errors have gone unnoticed in the past as well.

The third-umpire came in question towards the end of Mumbai's innings as well when Chris Woakes thought he had Hardik Pandya dismissed. The on-field umpire gave it out and Pandya decided to review it. Ultra-Edge showed a small spike as the ball crossed the bat, however, the third-umpire reversed the decision to not-out.

Author's take

Luckily, the technical error did not have a bearing on the final result of the match. These type of errors have taken place in the past and in order to reduce them, the third-umpire should be slightly more vigilante while viewing the replay and ensuring the correct one is showed on the screen.
